Wheat intolerance?

Over the last couple of weeks, my Labrador occasionally had loose poo (but not always). Then last year, she was spectacularly sick.
We went to the vets, who gave her a jab to stop the sickness, some tablets to stop the diarrhoea, and some recovery food. We took her back after three days to get worming stuff.
So over the last few days we have gradually gone from recovery food back to her normal food (Wag) last night she had her first full wag meal, and was sick in the night again.
In the past, she's wolfed down chicken food, and has been sick in the same way. (she gets no access to this btw, it's not a regular occurrence!)
The vet gave her a really thorough check up, and couldn't find any signs of anything obvious, and the dog is absolutely fine in herself.

Do I try her on different food? (James Wellbeloved?)
Anything else I should try?
(she is going back to the vets, but they are sceptical about food intolerances, so I thought I'd ask here before we go)
Thankyou :)

No, it didn't, but while she was on the vet food, she had no sickness or diarrhoea - would that happen if it was campylobacter, and wouldn't she be quite poorly?

Ah - Thankyou, I'll see if they'll check for that :)

What was the prescribed food?

midori1999 · 01/03/2011 16:49

I think I'd be looking at changing the food anyway, my Rats won't even eat Wagg dog food! Shock

Look for something that has as high meat content as possible (at least around 30%, preferably double that)and if it has cereals, only rice. A lot of dogs are also intolerant to chicken or beef, so that could be a factor too.

One of my dogs will eat the hen food given the chance too. If I don't watch him he has his head in the sack as soon as my back is turned feeding them. Luckily he's never mamanged ot get enough to make him ill, but I have heard of dogs eating hen food with disaterous consequences, so I am very careful these days.

My 5 month old puppy has continual diarrhoea and I am forever in and out the vets with him to try and sort it. He has been on James Wellbeloved for about 5 weeks now and it hasn't made a single ounce of difference. Vet has now suggested that we try Burns for him and drop a sample in if that doesn't make a difference but I am reluctant to change his diet as I have heard that this can cause just as many problems??

Think I will make every effort to get that sample in asap as from the suggestions made by others on here he could possibly be suffering from undiagnosed camplylobacter???

LetThereBeCupcakes · 03/03/2011 08:20

Ingredients of wagg (from their own website):

Wheat, Meat Meal, Wheatfeed, Rice (min 4% in rice disc), Maize, Chicken Meat Meal (min 4% in brown chunk), Digest, Poultry Fat, Linseed, Beet Pulp, Peas (min 4% in pea kibble), Carrots (min 4% in the carrot kibble), Lucerne, Minerals, Yeast (0.08%), Citrus Extract (0.04%), Yucca Extract (0.01%)

So, basically just cereal (packaging) and a little bit of meat meal. I really would change the food. Look for something that actually has meat in it - not meat / animal derivatives. Burns and JWB are both good.

MollyMooCow - JWB is a good food but if your dog doesn't get on with (and you'll need to rule out actual medical conditions first, like you say), changing the food is the best way forward. So long as you do it gradually, mixing old food with new for a period of time, you shouldn't have a problem. Do be aware that it can take a few weeks after the change for the old food to completely get out of your dog's system, so that sample may not make any difference really.

Just to update - she is fine. The vet thinks I fed her too much too quickly, so I went back to 4/5 tiny meals and have been slowly going back to her normal 2 meals a day.
Will change food when she's definitely ok.
Thankyou for the advice :)
