I am gutted, my mam has just had her 8 yr old husky put to sleep. He was diagnosed with diabeties by a different vet at the weekend. Today he started bumping into things and was very poorly. My mam took him to the vet. They have said he has some form autoimmune disease? and he is unlikely to recover. The vet told her it would be kinder to have him put to sleep as he would deteriorate and is partially blind. My mam is in pieces as she thought he just had diabeties which she could treat. She also has a german shepherd and is worried about how she will cope as they have been together since pups. Has anyone got any advice or been through the same thing with a dog loosing a companion? Its all happened so quickly.

oh i am so sorry.

I gave one of my dogs blankets to the other dogs. He had been pts at the vet and they were great buddies. He had been wrapped in it afterwards.

His little pal knew. He scrunched it up and lay on it. Sad Sad

They both slept next to each other in my mams dining room on a sofa next to each other, they have never been apart. The german shepherd is so soft and shows her emotion so i think this is really going to affect her. Was your dog ok afterwards?

one of them lost quite a bit of weight and cried alot, but extra cuddles and special time and titbits got him through. Can't mention his name though as he still perks up and looks for him. Sad

It is truly horrible though, i feel for you and your family and of course the GS

A close friend recently had her dog PTS and decided for a number of reasons to have it done at home. One of the many advantages of this is that teh other dog/s can see and "say goodbye" to their friend, and understand what has happened.

Dogs do grieve - they miss their companions and they also pick up on the grief felt by their owners. I don't think there is ever an easy way to deal with it, for both owners and pets, except the passing of time and to try to minimise any other stresses or changes at the same time. If your mum has a coat or blanket that smells of the dog that is gone, the other dog may find that comforting to sniff or cuddle.

So sorry for you and your mum. This has all happened very quickly, you must be both in shock. Sad

so sorry OP, what a shock that must have been for your poor mum. Sad

fifi25 · 28/02/2011 22:11

It was a shock it happened so fast, she had got round the diabeties and doing the injections, the 2nd vet gave a different diagnosis to the 1st vet. The 2nd vet is the one she has used for years. She took it to another one down the street as she couldnt get an emergency appointment at the weekend.

Both the dogs lay on a blanket on the settee in the dining room so ive told her not to wash it for a while.

Thanks everyone

I'm so sorry the read about your Mum's dog.

We had to have a young dog pts last year - she had been unwell and went in for tests and because she had untreatable tumours they didn't brng her round from the anaesthetic.

It was a huge shock and our other dog was very unsettled for several weeks.
We would go out for a walk and when we came home he would run to her bed and look for her. He wouldn't sleep downstairs - they always slept together so he has ended up in our bedroom (despite DH saying it would never happen)

He has now settled into a new routine but we are getting another dog in the next couple of weeks so he will have to adjust again, but hopefully this will be a happy change.

The GS has been fine and has been spoilt rotten, she never cried or fretted but she may think he is over my brothers. My mams still upset but better than yesterday. She took the day off work to keep the GS company.

My mam cant get another dog as the GS is not good with them but the husky was. She says shes never getting anymore. This is probably just because she is upset at the min, Thanks
