Was out walking the dog this morning. 4 1/2 year old Dalmatian. Went on our normal route, passed lots of dogs as usual.
On the way back home a lady ran passed- us with a little Staffie, suddenly the dog turned as they were going past and 'went' for the poor little dog!
Straight away I pulled him towards me and he acted like nothing had happened!
The Lady shouted at me (rightly so) and all I could do was apologise.
Further away from us she checked the poor little chap over - I knew he hadnt made contact but was very happy to have that confirmed.
This has never happened before - ever.
He has two long walks/runs every day in all sorts of places, the beach, woods etc and every day we go past all sorts of dogs, normally off lead as his recall is amazing and we've never had any reason to believe he was in anyway aggressive.
I just dont understand what happened, I feel so bad for that Lady and her poor dog.
2 minutes later we walked passed another dog and he was fine - not interested.
Obviously I am going to contact a good dog trainer but in the mean time he will still need to be taken out.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply!
He obviously knew the lady was coming up behind us but maybe he was unsure.
To be honest he doesnt spend that much time on a lead - only when on a road.
Hopefully this was a one off so I think I'll take your advice, get the treats out and go for another walk.
I dont want to lose trust in him.

I think you are overreacting, but I think you are a great owner for caring so much about it. It sounds like he just got a bit of a fright as the other dog was running up from behind and startled him. I wouldn't worry, he listened to your command and was otherwise normal. You might react too if someone ran up behind you and gave you a start.

Maybe I did overreact slightly, just shocked me more than anything.
Took him out again this afternoon and was back to normal and we saw quite a few dogs on our way.
Just felt really bad for the poor staffie, he was very frightened.
Hopefully it never happens again!
