Why I really really love my dog

DrNortherner · 19/02/2011 16:39

In amongst all these negative threads about dogs, lets have a dog bigging up our 4 legged friends.

My dog is a 3 year black lab. We got him as a rescue dog at 9months old and he is the best thing we ever did.

We love him to bits, he loves us to bits, he makes us laugh, he follows me everywhere, he gets the sofa at night and we get the floor Hmm, he loves playing hide and seek in the woods with ds he is always delighted to see us, even if we've only been gone 5 minutes.

I lost my dad in 2009 and my dog gave me a reason to go out everyday and walk in the fresh air, sometimes with tears rolling down my face but as it was just me and him nobody cared! He is a great tonic and a great friend.

My name is DrNortherner and I am a dog crank.

Really nice thread :)

I love my 8 year old sheltie because he is so loyal. He would cross hell and high water for us. He's always there, keeping an eye on us, protecting us. He's usually right under my feet, wherever I am.

I love my JRT cross puppy because she saved me. I had very bad depression following a horrible, complicated miscarriage, with no light at the end of the tunnel. Then I got her and the world has been brighter ever since. She's quirky, bright and fun with a lot of character. She keeps me on my toes in the best possible way. She's been the silver lining to a very black cloud. :)

My dog is a 16 month old SBT called Lola.

She is crazy, smelly, scared of her own shadow, but that smile Grin

She sneaks on to the sofa to sit on my lap and snuffles in my ear, she is so tolerant with the Dc they absolutley adore her.

She is completely silent, never barks or 'talks'...untill shes asleep, then she whines, yelps, growls and yodels!

She is beautiful Smile

AllTheYoungDoods · 23/02/2011 18:38

Ha, that comment about the sealed yoghurt made me smile!

I opened a jar of jam the other day and it had a mohican of dog hair around its lid.

Among the many reasons I love mine is because I am not, nor never will be, a morning person. Yet every morning first thing he barrels up to me like it's the most exciting day ever. He licks my legs while I make a cup of tea, then as soon as I say 'Bed' settles down for a 2 hour snooze while I begin my morning's work (or go back to bed if it's weekend!). He is the perfect hangover dog.

Just coming to update this tread with 'I don't know why I love my dog su much'

Earlier I had popped to the downstairs toilet and the dog (as he often does) had accompanied me.

There was a knock at the door and like a speeding bullet the git the dog leapt up, opened the bathroom door wide(perfect line of sight to front door) to reveal me sat on the loo.

The two builders (who I will have to see daily for the next few weeks) were stunned - the older one is being very polite and acting as if nothing has happened the younger one is still trying hard not to laugh everytime he sees me.

minmooch · 24/02/2011 13:15

Ilsalund - Grin that has made my day!

Ormirian · 24/02/2011 13:18

Stop it you horrible lucky people! I don't have a dog and don't think I will ever have one Sad

I would like one, the DC would like one, DH would like one. But our life won't allow one. I keep thinking about it but no matter how I try I can't see it would be feasible or fair.

IlsaLund · 24/02/2011 13:21

Orm - you can have mine Grin

He is now sleeping in the conservatory looking innocent and sweet - but I know better

Jaynerae · 24/02/2011 22:20

I love my Beagle, because she loves me, she is pretty, intelligent, a thief, very strong willed and she's mine! She's hard work and a handful, you literally have to watch her every minute, like a toddler. She likes to eat everything that is not edible and everything that is edible, but she's my girl.

I love my CKCS because we only adopted him 3 weeks ago and it feels like he has always been part of my life, he has settled in and is at home. he adores me, follows me, watches where I am, will go for a walk with DH, but looks at me when I stay at home with DC and seems to say aren't you coming mum, well then I'm not going either!

emptyshell · 25/02/2011 08:34

My rescue dog's given me my life back after the year of utter shit last year and all the grief and pain.

He's as thick as two very stupid short planks, farts so loudly he wakes himself up from sleep, hogs the bed and sofa when allowed... but he's got these big dopey ears that I swear could pick up Sky TV and he's hilarious... and so sweet and caring when you're crying that it's not true.

chickchickchicken · 25/02/2011 22:21

orm - have you thought about volunteering with papas? you get the company of a dog but without the overall responsibility.
i could bore share with you lots of success stories

islalund - Grin that is so funny

Ormirian · 26/02/2011 11:24

I'd love to. But the reasons we can't have a dog remain. No-one at home all day, not enough time to devote to it, 2 cats. I'd just feel so guilty leaving a dog at home all day with no company.

chickchickchicken · 26/02/2011 12:46

aha you sound exactly like one of the papas volunteer i know, even down to having two cats.

the dog wouldnt live you with you. their permanent home is with their owner. you would walk the dog, take for days out when convenient for both parties, take dog to meet kids from school, etc.

some people do this on the weekend, some every day, some just during the school holidays. you build up a relationship with owner who for various reasons needs help with walking their dog and this arrangement can last for years.

its with a registered org and volunteers are checked - i know a reference is needed, not sure if a crb is done too. no cost to volunteer.

its a win win win situation. win (dog gets extra fun, can help to stay in current home if that was under threat due to ill health), win (can help owner keep their pet), win (volunteer get to do all the fun things with dog - take for walk, go to fun dog shows, pick kids up from school, etc)

i know of a dog who has gone to westonbirt dog walk and show today with papas volunteers. the family work full time, two elderly cats who dont like dogs, and two young children who would love to have a dog but cant for the above reasons

JaxTellersOldLady · 27/02/2011 11:45

I am currently in Scotland as my Dad is v ill in hospital. I went home last Friday and the welcome I got from both my dogs, but especially my 5month puppy was amazing! I came back up to Scotland on Weds morning and my Mums little yorkie gave me such a huge welcome when I walked in the door. Not the same as my enormous GSDs, but very welcome.

I know when I go back to England tomorrow that my Mums little munchkin will miss me, but also my dogs will love me to death when I walk in the door... leave me for 5 mins to get settled then start prodding their lead for a walk in the woods! I can honestly say that I have missed my dogs, missed walking them - despite the mud fest that is everywhere at this time of year. Oh, and I have missed taking the youngster to dog class. Shock

Ormirian · 27/02/2011 11:47

Chick do you have a link for them?

MogadoredMemoo · 27/02/2011 12:08

We have a 2yo lab cross, we got her from the dogs homes when she was a pup. She had been dumped by a canal in Manchester.

She is called Flora and is the daftest dog ever. She think she is one of the kids and follows them round everywhere. She even goes down the slide in the garden.

She has amazed us with how gentle she is around the baby. She Is like her guardian angel. You can see her fretting if the baby I'd upset.

The funniest thing she does is jump up to try and catch birds that are flying over head. She just doesn't get how high up they are.

When she was a pup she was quite anxious and spent a lot if time sleeping with her head on my shoulder and even though she is now the size of a small horse she still tries to get on my shoulder for a cuddle.

chickchickchicken · 27/02/2011 13:12

orm - they are called PAPAS (people and pets advocacy service).

despite reading a few times Valhalla instructions how to do a link i am too thick busy to work it out so details are

www.papas.org.uk

email julie who runs it at [email protected]

chickchickchicken · 27/02/2011 14:22

chickchickchicken · 27/02/2011 14:23

Sad thought i had figured out how to do link!!

JessRabbit · 27/02/2011 14:29

My dog makes eye contact like no person I could think of, his big brown eyes talk to me and tell me what he's thinking. His twitchy ears are like independent satellite dishes channelling the outside world into his head.

He sits next to me on the sofa and gives me his paw to hold, he also loves being stroked under his armpit. He has a small screw tail which doesn't wag so he wiggles his whole body when he is pleased to see someone.

He barks like a dog 5 times his size which makes me feel incredibly safe and despite his scary, droopy face he is the sweetest boy I could ever want.

I heart my dog

DaffadownDilly · 27/02/2011 16:04

I have a 7 year old Shih-tzu, although tiny and blind in one eye tries to protect me from any percieved threat. She sleeps on my bed, never leaves my side, is so so good with the children and puts up with more than she should have to. She is basically an old lady in a small dogs body. She's definitely the best dog I have ever known.

Tolalola · 27/02/2011 16:26

I love all of mine so much.

Number 1 because she's ancient and a bit rickety and smelly and is the most faithful friend I have ever had. She's been with me 10 years and despite being feral when I got her, put her head on my knee within 10 minutes of me catching her and has never looked back. I know she would die for me.

Number 2 because he looks beautiful and elegant, but is actually extremely clumsy, and regularly falls in the pond Grin. He is obedient, intelligent and wants to please me so much. He always looks at me before doing things to check if it's ok. And he sneaks onto the bed for a cuddle when DP is out.

Number 3 because he is quite stupid, but very affectionate, and has the thickest, softest white fur of any dog ever, and a silly pink nose. He thinks it's absolutely hilarious that I have lost my voice, and has spent the whole morning trying to climb onto my lap and looking quizically into my face and wriggling his whole body in amusement every time I speak.
