Too Much Upset to Change Dog's Name???

MmeBucket · 15/02/2011 19:35

After losing our much-loved dog to cancer, we found a new one to love. Names have never really been an issue before, because we've gotten them from a rescue, and they weren't attached to their name, because they hadn't had it for long. Our new dog has been in a rescue foster home since the beginning of August, and it is obvious she knows what her name is. She's a great dog, but we really dislike her name. I've looked up the subject on the internet, and have seen advice some saying it is fine, others saying no it isn't. Any advice from the wise members of the doghouse?

I would change it. If you use it all the time she will soon get used to it. However it will be easier if you change it to something with a similar ring to it.
I want to know what the name is now thou!

Bearing in mind that most strays will have been owned by someone and known a name for X amount of years, yet they adapt to another name when adopted fro rescue I'd say it would be fine to change it. My last pound dog was 8 years old when I took her on - goodness knows what she'd been called in the past but for the next 4 years she happily answered to the name of Cassie. :)

Thanks.

It really isn't that bad of a name. Her name is Maybelle. It is just a bit old fashioned for us, and I don't really think she looks like a Maybelle. Picture of Maybelle Maybe we're wrong.

just looked at her pic and she is beautiful.

i actually like the name, its a pretty name and she is a pretty dog. dont mean you shouldnt change it, just saying i like it

i am so glad she has found a new home Smile

Vallhala · 15/02/2011 22:31

Oh my, she is sweet! :)

I rather like her name too, I think it suits her. :)

stleger · 15/02/2011 22:47

Isn't she cute! There was a dispute in the rescue centre when we picked up our dog on whether his original name was Max or Pepe - we use Max. We brought him home - our neighbour's elderly Twinkle spent a lot of time with us at that time (she died last year). In our house when she first appeared, my kids had tried assorted names on her, and she responded to Dentist Grin

CalamityKate · 16/02/2011 00:26

I got my dog when she was 7 and changed her name. It took her about 3 weeks to get used to it.

I'm assuming the dog responds to Maybelle - in which case spend a while calling her "Newname Maybelle" and within a short space of time the new name becomes a predictor of the old name, and she'll respond to Newname expecting Maybelle to follow.

Make sure something lovely happens when she hears her new name - treats or what have you - and it won't take her long at all to catch on :)

awwwwwww a sausage dog - love them Smile
i think her name suits her but our pets are always having nicknames and they get used to them

ChippingInAuntyToThomas · 16/02/2011 01:27

Oh she is a little sweetheart :) I think it's an awful name (for any living creature!) but Belle is lovely. If you choose a new name and she gets a reward when she reponds she wont give a rats arse what you call her Grin

Carnival · 16/02/2011 01:33

just 'belle'?

how about mabel?

MmeLindt · 16/02/2011 08:52

She is gorgeous.

Agree with Mabel. She looks like a Mabel.

We could get her together with my Daphne. They will sound like two old ladies getting together for tea and crumpets.

sharbie · 16/02/2011 08:54

Smile mme lindt

chickchickchicken · 16/02/2011 10:44

i like Mabel too.

our small JRT is called Bobby but he also responds to Rat and Ratface Blush

Ephiny · 16/02/2011 11:50

Our dog was given a new name when he came into rescue (they rename all dogs for some reaons Confused) even though the old name was known. We stuck with the new name as it's much nicer and really suits him, he seemed to adapt to it quickly and with no problems. If I said the old name now I doubt he'd respond.

She looks a really sweet little girl (what a shame about her poor eye, but it's amazing how dogs can adapt to such things and just get on with it!). She looks like she could be a Mabel to me.

Abr1de · 16/02/2011 12:01

Yup, just call her Mabel or Belle.

Both lovely.

MmeBucket · 16/02/2011 15:22

We were thinking about just Belle, but we've had her for a few days, and Maybelle is kind of starting to stick. I actually call her 'My Belt' because about 8:00 when I wind down at night and sit on the couch she waits for me to settle in, and then come plops herself low across my lap right where a belt would be.

I think she looks like an Ani for some reason. DH doesn't agree.

My dogs called Maisie but answers to Stacey (one of many nicknames) so try a similar sounding name.

theagedparent · 16/02/2011 15:29

Our old dog was called Fanny when we got her, she soon got used to a new name!

ChippingInAuntyToThomas · 17/02/2011 10:49

theagedparent - why?

Grin
auntyfash · 17/02/2011 23:08

I don't think a namechange would be too confusing really. My old dog was called Simba but she also answered to Boo, Booboo, Bimmy and Bimbo.

lurcherlover · 18/02/2011 00:57

Our rescue dog was 6 when we got him and we changed his name - he adapted really quickly. He also only has one eye, and he manages just fine. She's gorgeous, congratulations!
