He's just being a git. Is he crate trained? Has he seen a vet to rule out any health problems?

cocolepew · 14/02/2011 16:40

She sleeps with us Grin She gets up at least twice a night I wasn't sure if I should ignore her.

Ah right. I wouldn't start ignoring her straight from the off but maybe leave her a while longer each time she cries, until she is going through the night, which she should be capable of.

Can you make sure she has a nice late evening stroll round the neighbourhood? This may help to get her a little more tired and emptied out. When she does wake you in the night, just quietly take her out to the garden with no fuss/strokes/tickles, let her wee, then straight back in (not having a long and interesting sniff) and back to bed with no fuss/speech. She will soon learn that if she is waking you for a play/attention, this won't work.

I have found that before I started crate training, our puppies took much longer to toilet train. Certainly by her age she should be able to hold it all night, but all dogs are different.

I second Scuttle's suggestion of quietly taking her out at night, no eye contact, no touching or stroking and no talking to her except maybe a quiet 'good girl' if she wees outside.

Shes not doing it for attention I dont speak to her, she gets up wees and goes back to sleep again, it takes minutes. Maybe she has a bladder like me Smile

What type of dog is she?

I second the crate for getting a dog to go through the night quickly. Last 3 puppies went through the night 11.00-7.00 from 8 weeks in a locked crate.

our 11month old has gone from 10pm till 7am since he was about 10 weeks. On the odd time he will whine earlier.
He is crate trained

Mine is the same age and goes through the night now 6 nights out of 7, but not always - though getting better and better, so I'm being patient. Puppy training at 6-7 months didn't seem to think there was any cause for worry.

It's really my fault as older dog was crate trained very quickly but puppy didn't initially like the crate so we put down puppy pads. We're still putting down puppy pads Hmm. Though as I say, she uses them 1 night a week now at the most and getting better.

I find the key is a late night walk/ trip to the garden, and when I get up she has to go downstairs immediately (hard as I'm always desperate for the loo, but if I go first she runs to the puppy pads) and we're fine.

Trouble is I often need the loo middle of the night and sometimes that wakes her up enough that I think she needs it too. I could let her out but then I'll be doing it every night. If I sleep through and there are no disturbances, she never uses the pads. Like your dog, she sleeps with us.

If I haven't cracked it 100% by a year I will confine her more at night - I know she won't want to wet her bed or our bed.

My lab is months has been 'dry 'during the night from soon after she was house trained ,we got her (9 weeks ).

She was never crate trained , but she has a bedtime routine - out in garden ,I still tell her what I want her to do , couple of dog buiscuits , on her bed , lights out close door , I go upstairs .

Nothing heard until morning.

Avantia · 17/02/2011 12:30

My lab is 8 months , it should say Smile
