Our lab will be experienecing the joy of camping for the first time in May half term . She will be nearly a year old. I know that I will have to buy a stake to tie her up but haven't really thought about anything else.

Any do's and don'ts or general advice re camping with a dog .

Where does your dog sleep ? DH has threatened to put her in the car if she starts snoring - only because other campers will think its him Grin

He will love it! Take my spaniel for a caravan holiday every year. Never been able to stop him swimming so he spends the whole week ranging from vaguely damp to soaking wet. I cannot stop mine rolling in all manner of disgusting things on the beach. Agree re the stake and chain for tying up.
Have fun!

take some flatpacked cardboard or an extra blanket to go under their bed for extra insulation

our dog loved camping with us as long as we let her in with me and DH to sleep. We tried letting her sleep with dd1 in a smaller tent one night and the dog decided to swicth tents in the middle of the night by digging her way out of one and into the other!

Thanks all, How was your dog in the night when the local wildlife was about ?

We camped through Europe with 2 dogs and 2 children. It was great fun and we had no problems. Depending on where you are going, and for how long, it is worth checking out where the local vet is, and really important to have a mobile phone number on the dog tag in case he goes running off. We had no problems with night time wildlife! I think dogs quite like being with us and will only make a fuss if they feel threatened! Have lots of fun!

Avantia · 10/02/2011 17:53

yes we have our mobile phone number on her tag , good idea about finding location of local vet .

we camp with our dog (small terrier)

she loves it Smile ditto the screw in stake to tie to outside. in the tent she sleeps in her travel crate, we put a blanket over it to keep it cosy like her own little mini tent.

have seen in pet shops and outdoor stores the 'pop out' camping dog bowls etc which look quite cool but dh (tight with money!) wouldn't let me Angry

We have a little pop up camping tent for the dog for the beach to give her some shade. They're only a few quid and v useful.

Batteryhuman · 11/02/2011 16:37

kennel
We borrow a pop up kennel like this which goes flat in the bottom of the boot when travelling and can be moved around to a shady spot during the day and inside at night. Our 2 dogs get very tangled up when tethered.

mollymoocow · 11/02/2011 19:23

We have an inflatabl air bed which takes up all our sleeping compartment so have decided to get a little roll out mat to go over the top of it so doglet doesn't puncture it!! Also thought of getting a pop up travel crate but not sure if it will be a waste of money or not....

We plan on taking doglet on his first camping break over Royal Wedding weekend when he will be 6 1/2 months Grin hopefully he will enjoy it as much as we all do ...

We took our pup camping with us quite a bit last summer. We didn't get any special equipment, just a few extra towels and plenty of chews.

He slept with us (we all use the one tent) and moved from person to person in the night, made the occasional noise when people arrived late in the night but was otherwise fine. We did notice that if we camped somewhere for more than a night or two he did get the inclination to go and make friends with other campers, but if we were somewhere new he stayed pretty close.

There were a couple of camps where he had to be on a long line, which he hated (and resulted in him busting his collar one time when he just couldn't help chase a squirrel), but the park wardens said he might attract bears back to our camp if he wandered into them, so no choice there really!

MrsSnaplegs · 13/02/2011 07:05

nooka bears you say - guess you are not in uk!
We always camp with our dog, she sleeps between our air bed and dd on her own bed from home normally warm enough but after October she normally has a blanket as well. She has a dog coat for after sept as she gets really cold - Rhodesian ridgeback - with short hair. No other special requirements except the stake and chain.

Avantia · 13/02/2011 07:33

Bears ! Shock

Pop up tent out of question - she will take that apart in not time .

She will no doubt sleep between us and the kids .

Lol. I live in Canada now and although we didn't really believe it the bears are a real problem in the bigger campsites.

Avantia · 13/02/2011 19:28

I suppose it makes popping out to the loo in the night a bit more exciting !!

Now today I had a thought re the stake and tie out rope/chain - the ones I have looked at online like this are they chew proof ?

Our lab got through another lead today whilst sitting with DH wathcing the boys play a football match . So a rope tie out will be no good . where could I get a long chain for the tie out stake ? or is there a product out there ?

I've never got on with those screw in stakes - never managed to screw one down succesfully. The only time I thought it was in enough to tie her to it - she pulled it out and ran across the campsite with it attached to her lead and cut her legs on it. Sad

I now take a long bit of rope and tie her onto the car or van. She can wonder in and out the tent/van and still be tied up. Actually a lot of teh time I don't tie her up as she won't run off, but one campsite owner was funny with me once when he came and found her fast asleep next to me but not tied up. Rules are rules I guess so I tied her up as asked.

MrsSnaplegs · 14/02/2011 08:44

We just use a long chain from diy shop with a caribina at each end and attach one end to the stake.
