Walking guidelines for puppies

I know the guidelines for walking pups is 5 mins for every month of their life but are there instances where it is acceptable to walk for longer? I have a four month old Border Collie who we currently take for 3 x 20 min walks per day, he has constant access to the garden and I play with him regularly throughout the day along with regular, short, training sessions.

Problem is, he has so much energy and the walks do nothing to tire him out. I would happily walk him all day but I know this not allowed. Can any of you more experienced dog owners offer me some advice please?

TIA

You can walk an adult border collies for 12 hours a day and they will still come home and pick up a ball for you to play with!

Collies need a lot of mental stimulation and that will tire them out as much as exercise. So I would increase his training, get a clicker and teach a new trick each week, make him work for all his meals, hide the food or give it to him in a kong.

Also the more you play and stimulate a collie the more hyper they can get - he needs to learn that there are chill out times as well. So teach him to love his crate and you may need to give him enforced rest timealicedogs.

My GSDs are the same. I have a 5 month old and a almost 2 yr old. I can walk my older one for ages, playing, with other dogs, little bit of training but by the time we get home and we go out to the garden he is there with a ball/toy wanting more. Bless him

I already use a clicker with him and he is learning something new every few days - struggling with a Hi 5 tho!!! Grin

He is a really good boy and always lies in his crate while I am pottering around the kitchen and loves his naps as much as the rest of the family Grin

At what age does the 5 mins per month stop??
