Help needed - up all night because dog barking

We have a border terrier who is 2. He's generally a good dog, he gets regular walks and attention, although less now since we have a 6mo dd. He has always been good at going to bed in the kitchen and staying quiet all night. Until recently - something has spooked him and he has had random nights where he is yipping for attention on and off all night. My dh and I try to ignore it but if it persists we go downstairs and tell him bed. (I don't want to disturb the neighbours either). This stops it for a while, but maybe an or so hour later he will carry on. Last night, I was up for what it seemed every hour, and finally caved in at 5am where I let him out. (He usually gets let out at 7ish and lays on the floor in the bedroom til we get up). It annoys me that my 6mo is being golden sleeping through, and then my dog has me up all night! Any advice/similar experiences?
TIA

I had the same problem with my dog too.

I took him to the vet for a check up - no problems, he was healthy. My vet recommended leaving him bark, but tbh it did not help.

Now I have bought a DAP infuser. I do not know if it helps, but he is being good now. If he barks I let him out in the garden to see if he needs the toilet, and then put him back to bed and let him sleep with the clothes I have worn that day. If he wakes me again, I speak sharply to him because I know there is nothing else he needs.

Good luck, it is horrible when your dog will not sleep.

Thanks madsometimes. I used a DAP infuser when we moved house and when we had our dd. But didn't think to use one for this, that's a good idea.
I don't let him out in the night because he never needs it and just hides in the garden because he knows I'm going to leave him in the kitchen again.
Have just taken him out with another dog in order to tire him out and see if it makes a difference!

Hi Alfonzo,

Our puppy is 7 months and despite being a great dog with a steady bedtime routine, in the last couple of weeks we?ve also had a few sleepless nights with barking and not settling until very late. I even had a night sleeping on the sofa to try and pacify her so the barking would not wake DP and neighbours!

Anyway, I thought she might have come on heat and was having a hormone rush or something but on reflection I think she was having tummy problems- trouble digesting- which was unsettling her. From the evidence on her morning walk I think she had a bad case of constipation because when I took her out I barely had enough toilet bags to pick up after her. I don?t want to be too graphic but has he eaten something or had a new food introduced to his diet that may disagree with his stomach, leading to grumbles?

I hope it works out and he gets back to normal soon!

x

Littlebirdlost - thanks for your suggestion but his diet hasn't changed recently. He's always very regular Grin
Thinking about it now it was very windy last night and there were lots of noises/rattles of things blowing outside. I think this contributed to his anxiety of being on his own in the kitchen. Although he has been unsettled recently and it hasn't been windy. Can't change the weather though, will see how it goes tonight!
