Barking dog - how to stop it

The other thread has reminded me to ask advice on our dog barking.

We have a 2yo Maltese Terrier/Cavalier King Charles. She is very sweet but barks when someone passes the house. Not all the time, mainly when other dogs go by. Sometimes when people go by on bikes.

She barks inside the house which annoys us but not the neighbours as there is a good bit between us and their house. But they will hear her when she is in the garden, as she is a lot in summer.

There are a few dogs where she goes absolutely daft when they pass - some of them "friends" of hers, dogs we know.

What is the best way to tackle this? At present we are putting her in the hall when she barks at dogs (although I admit we are not quite as consequent with this as we should be).

I am really sorry about the latter part of that article (the de-bark op) Shock

I did not want your post to go ignored so googled and that article seemed fairly helpful except I did not read all of it.

I read the de-bark op with my mouth wide open. Why would anyone do that to a dog?

Thanks for looking for the article though.

I think Valhalla would be best to ask about the barking problem. It is shocking that people would de-bark their dogs and I had no idea that this even occurs.

I have just spent over 2 hours cutting the dog's hair, blowdrying and combing matts out. We are both exhausted. She is not barking.

There is a thread here about using clickers. Minimu1 is a dog trainer.

Hmm. I knew someone was going to say clickers. I have had one for some time but never got around to using it much.

hi my jack russell, age 3 barks at the front door, when he hears someone walk past, school kids going to school, he can be dozing off in the front room and as soon as he hears a noise up he gets barking, frightning the life out of everyone within his distance, we ave bought a silent ringer alarm, so as soon as he barks it sets off a high pitched noise, but he jus barks thru it, i got him a collar with the same effect only it vibrates around his neck when he barks, no point in that either, and i got him a muzzle, one that states its hard for a dog to remove, this took him all of 20 seconds to take off lol..
i get up and show him no one is at the door, he barks mainly at men who come over, ot women, he will run around them but not get close and still bark at them, eventually he calms down and sometimes we have to out him in the garden or kitchen..
I dont have a clue why he does this now, any ideas?? thanks
