Didn't want friend to stay with their dogs, query re training

I'm not a dog owner and to be frank haven't got a clue so I'm looking to those of you with experience to tell me what's normal.

A friend of mine bought two terrier puppies a while ago. I think they are now around 18 months old. The friend wanted to stay at my house with the dogs but I'm afraid I didn't want that.

The male hasn't been neutered and pees over the furniture. Is this normal for a male dog, I guess it is as it wants to make it's mark? Both dogs regularly pee/poo on the floor overnight. With training and proper walking evening and morning could this be avoided?

Sometimes the dogs only get walked once a day or are just let out in the garden. When I've walked with them they get over excited everytime they see another dog/child, straining and jumping on their leashes. They don't seem aggressive but perhaps haven't been socialised properly?

They've also been allowed to jump on the sitting room furniture (which I know is personal choice) but they don't seem to be able to obey basic commands to sit/stay/get down.

Would dog training classes help? I guess it's more difficult to train two dogs than one. To be honest I feel sorry for the dogs as they are left at home all day by themselves although I suppose they have each others company.

I think you're right and they haven't been properly trained/socialised at all, not even basic house-training from the sound of it. They shouldn't be left alone all day either :(, training classes are fine but dogs and especially puppies need a lot more time and committment from their owners than your friend seems to be able or willing to give them...

Just one reason why getting two puppies together is a Bad Bad idea...

DooinMeCleanin · 02/02/2011 16:55

My male dog did not pee up my furniture before he was neutered. He had no training when we adopted him, he still did not do this.

JaxTellersOldLady · 02/02/2011 22:05

my male dog has never peed up the furniture! Shock

but then I wouldnt have 2 puppies from the same litter together. Mostly a recipe for disaster imvho.

Your friend needs to train/walk the dogs seperately and get a grip on socialising them with other people, dogs, situations.

oh, and I wouldnt have them to stay in my house either! Unless they were crated

Saiditagain · 04/02/2011 11:04

Thanks for all your responses. At the risk of causing an argument I think I need to speak to her about the way she's looking after them...

Jax, why is getting two puppies from the same litter a problem?

because training two puppies effectively at the same time is virtually impossible even to the most experienced. Plus no decent breeder would allow you to take home two puppies, so it musty have been a back yard breeder. Your friend needs to insure her dogs and pray they don't develop any problems due to bad breeding. As well as train them.

I got absolutely FLAMED on another site for suggesting that getting two littermates was a bad idea.

"I'm a very experienced dog owner, I'll be fine, thank you very much" etc Hmm

Often wonder how it turned out.

CalamityKate · 04/02/2011 11:30

Oh and they were Border Collies IIRC.

misdee · 04/02/2011 21:42

i have two dogs from one litter. its hard work but is do-able. they need training seperatly . same for walks. but also walk them together.

Depending on where we are going, we sometimes leave the dogs in the car (weather being reasonable). Not everyone wants other peoples' dogs sniffing about in their house. If it is not practicle for your friend to either leave her hounds in the car or at home, perhaps you could restrict where they go.

The dogs do sound very untrained. You sound pretty wised up about the dogs - credit to you! I think a lot of people get dogs thinking they're lovely and fluffy and fun, and forget that if you want a lovely fluffy fun dog, it's an awful lot of work!
