she wont move, is just standing whining very loadly, i was up with her unitl 4am when she finally settled for a few hours but is back to the whining again now, she wont eat her food, although has polished off the left over cat food and a few bits of cheese which I used to get her pain killer in.
Is this normal, the vet definatly didnt prepare me for her being this bad and although I expecting a very sorry for herself girl I wasnt exp0ecting to be up all night.
Think i will phone the vets when I get back from school run just to check.
sorry for utter rambling but am very tired and very worried.

It is that bad. Our boy puppy has had two ops in his short life - one for eating a teddy, and one for castration. My dh had to sleep on the floor in the playroom with him all night....and when he was awake, he was really howling...It does pass quickly - it is unlikely you will have such a bad day/night today. My vet wouldn't give more pain killers as they wanted him to not move too much Confused

I wouldn't worry too much. I've taken several bitches to be spayed (my own and as a foster carer for dog rescue groups) and in my experience they are very miserable for the first 24 hours and then tend to pick up enormously. She has polished off the cat food so suspect she is refusing to eat her own food and whining in order to make a point!

Hope she is much better today x

thank you, she ended up sleeping in the lounge last night but I darent leave her on the sofa which is where she really wanted to be in case she fell off or something, I would have set up a bed for myself there if I had been expecting it, will be better prepared tonight, although ~I am so tired that I might set a bed up when I get back from dropping the kids off.

Spaying is fairly significant surgery for a bitch and the anaesthetic alone can leave them a bit confused and off-colour for a day or two, nevermind the pain from being cut open and having someone rummage about in their insides.

My vet insists on keeping bitches overnight after a spay so mine was ok by the time she came home 24 hours after the op. However, she had anaestetic recently for a minor operation and I brough her home the same day. Right through til the next morning, she was restless and HOWLED at everything...it was the most horrific sound - like a cat being strangled. I think her throat was sore because of the tube they put in when they're under anaesthetic and she couldn't bark properly so that was the only sound she could make.

By all means phone the vet for reassurance...I know I did, but hopefully you'll find that she'll improve as today goes on.

Ours was done before Christmas and she was barely moved for 24 hours then gradually picked up and within 3 days was complaining about being confined to the lead. 6 weeks on, the scar is just about invisible, and apart from still being a little bald is 110% again. And we're thrilled at the thought of no more false pregnancies for her!

It is major invasive surgery, and I expect your vet is just being cautious, I'm sure she'll be fine in a few days.

ditavonteesed · 20/01/2011 11:41

Well she is fine thank god, vet said she seems to have a really low pain threshold, proved when they gave her another pain relief injection which apparently doesnt hurt and she went mad. she is asleep on the sofa now so hopefully over the worse, they said if she is struggling again later to take her back for another injection.

Dita, it could be a reaction to the anaesthetic - one of ours had a GA last year for some dental work and a biopsy when he came to us as a foster, and he behaved in exactly the way you describe. I know a number of other owners who've seen/experienced this. I've taken other foster dogs through spaying with very much less problem - basically just groggy.

Definately get pain meds sorted out, but might be worth a chat with vet to see if they think sensitivity to GA could be an issue? This could be very useful if she ever needs a GA in the future.

Hope she is soon back on her feet and feeling better. Smile

Oh good - am glad you took her back as it did sound like she was in quite a bit of pain Sad. Don't hesitate to go back again if need be - there is no need for her to be in so much discomfort, even after a spay.

Good luck.
