Why does my puppy wee in older dog's bed?

We recently acquired a 10 week old female collie puppy. We also have a 12.5 year old neutered male collie. I can't say they are bosem buddies yet. Our old boy is very gentle and has been very tolerant of our rather "pushy" puppy. He will, however, tell her off when pushed.

We have had our puppy for 2 weeks and she has done a wee on our old boy's bed 4 times. Today she went to his bed and started to nip at him to entice him to play. He told her to get lost with a lip curl and she responded by squatting and weeing on his bed!

We are keeping a close eye on her and her toilet training is pretty good for such a young pup. However, she doesn't show the usual "signs" before she urinates on our dog's bed. Any clues as to why she is doing this and how we can stop it?

She probably weed on it once by accident (or out of submission when he's curled his lip at her) and then carried on because it smells of wee. Has it been washed recently? Or else it's become habit.

Submissive weeing is very common and they grow out of it but I'd give the bed a good wash and stop her going in it until she forgets it was ever a toilet.

If she wees anywhere else without all the usual signs I'd pop her to the vet to make sure she hasn't got a UTI.

I washed the outer cover in biological detergent and wiped and sprayed the waterproof liner with simple solution. I thought that was supposed to get rid of the scent. Is there something else I should use? I'm not sure if she was being submissive. She's quite a tough cookie and doesn't seem the least bit bothered when he tells her off - a bit like DS,actually.Grin

Prob just habit then. You'll probably never know!

Wash as you have in biological washing powder and spray the liner with specialist cleaner most pet shops have it.

Is there anyway you can block her from getting to the old boys bed. A dog gate maybe?

I would not think it is dominance or submissive but it may be due to an "emotion" of some sort excitement trying to get him to play or a bit nervous if he raises his lip etc.

I would be taking her out every half hour for a day or two to get back on track and only let her play with your other dog in the garden to stop this becoming habit forming. (Yep hard work - but only for a short while!)

Meant to say and I am sure you know that collies fab fab dogs can be quite pushy so I would intervene if old boy has had enough.

If the puppy ignores the raised lip and growl the only option left to your other dog is to up his reply and he doesn't sound as if he would enjoy that much. So if puppy is getting pushy I would remove puppy for time out or more exciting and controlled interaction with you.

Generaly puppy play though of course with your other dog is great if both parties are happy
