My brother has become homeless and has been living on our sofa for the last 3weeks, there is no chance of him finding housing in the near future and it's unfair on his poor dog to be here like he is.

He is a 6th generation Johnsons American Bulldog. He is 4.5years old, not neutered.

Gets on with everyone no matter age, I have 5 dc's from 9yrs - 1yr and he is absolutely fine with them and our cat!

The only reason we can't have him here long term is purely the lack of space. I really would love to keep him but just don't have room Sad

I am in Kent and if anyone can help at all please let me know.

Really not keen on handing him over to a rescue as he looks so big and a bit scary (even though he is a total softy!) he might just get left there and overlooked Sad

Hi NotShort. I feel like crap and am off to bed so am going to try to keep this brief, apologies for that.

PLEASE go through rescue, preferably breed rescue. These dogs are so easily abused in the wrong hands abd unlike rescue you cannot homecheck, demand to see mortgage/rent agreements, etc etc and could so easily be fooled into handing the dog over to someone who will abuse him.

AND FGS GET HIM NEUTERED! Unneutered he is a puppy farmers and dog fighters dream come true. Because of the interesr he will attract from the wrong sort of person it really is unwise to advertise him to strangers as you have here.

If I can help further please let me kbow and I'll reply tomorrow. He sounds adorable, btw!

Val (rescuer).

OP, please contact your breeder and breed rescue.

And for heavens sake get the dog neutered.

However, it is NYE so I would wait for a few days to give them a chance to get some things sorted out. They are not miracle workers.(except Valhalla)

I have a foster dog here - she is a Cane Corso and a gorgeous big lump of animal, but she is also homeless and in a week or two she is going into breed rescue if she doesnt have a new home. She is neutered and microchipped so her chances of a new life should be good.

Please please if you cannot keep this dog, try the rescue for his breed.

norfolkBRONZEturkey · 31/12/2010 11:03

Agree go fo rescue. You will find that people looking for all sorts of dogs look for them in rescues. We as a family prefer bigger dogs and I'm sure others do too

Vallhala · 31/12/2010 11:44

I'm not a miracle worker! I'm an idiot who loves dogs and who has midgets inside her face who are doing a tap dance on her sinuses! :o

NotShort, breed rescue will care for your DB's dog properly and are experienced in identifying suitable AmBull homes. This is not a breed for the inexperienced or faint-hearted, lovely as they are. Rescue will also guarantee to take the dog back, be that in a weeks time or 10 years time, if the new owner cannot for some reason keep him. Obviously your DB can't do that and can't guarantee that in the future. If DB rehomes privately and it all goes tits up what will happen to the dog? He may end up in far, far worse circumstances than dedicated no kill rescue - he could end up sold to the highest bidder, abused, used for fighting or bait, thrown onto the streets or taken to the vet and put to sleep. If your DB loves his dog, which I don't disbelieve at all, he will want better than that, surely?

If your DB has a concrete plan of when he will be in his own accomodation and able to care for pooch it MAY be possible to find some kind of foster for him (pooch that is, not DB!). Problem is that the majority of those who can offer this are rescuers like myself whose space and time is already committed to foster dogs from rescues or pounds but I can try. I will say though that DB will have to have a very firm timescale as the people who are the type to help just can't care for a dog indefinitely.

Vallhala · 31/12/2010 11:50

I should qualify that remark - those who may be able to care for someone's dog while that person gets their life back on track normally are unwilling to care for such a dog indefinitely as they have other committments. I'm not suggesting that rescue or fosterers can't care for their own dogs (or those they have a long term foster agreement for) indefinitely of course! It's just really hard to find help of this kind and even tougher when you can't say that it's "only for X amount of time".

sowhatis · 31/12/2010 11:54

id say rescue also.

having had/have a ddb and bm id say that these big breeds are a nightmare to find the right homes for. unfortunately ppl see their size and in the wrong hands they are lethal.

Take a look here:

another reason for getting him neutered prior to re homing and only using a rescue, i dont actually agree with the OP reasons for rehoming her dog (in linked thread), but thats besides the point.

www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=691136 :(

Vallhala · 31/12/2010 12:37

3CuteDarlings, every time I think I've so much knowledge of this type of behaviour that I'm out of tears I find myself sobbing again. The only positive is that this proves what I'm warning folk about - I'm sure that often people don't believe me and just write off warnings like mine as made-up hysteria.

Stupid, stupid fucking woman... a dog sold to an unchecked stranger who lied to obtain him, a dog forced to eat snow to survive, but only for a while... a dog abused, a dog poisoned and now dead. :(

OP, please don't let his death be in vain -learn from it and go via rescue. I'm happy to help if I can.

3cutedarlings · 31/12/2010 13:32

I know Val i followed the thread from the off and to say it was heartbreaking is an understatement :(, the worst of it is that the poster received sound advice on how best to re home him and choose not to take it!! Angry and there are still threads posted on that forum from people wanting to rehome intact dogs daily! thankfully it is very heavily moderated by some very knowledgable animal lovers.

Thank you for your replies Smile Sorry haven't been back been crazy here.

As it stands at the moment he is at DB's ex's dw's house and she is having him for a while.

I totally agree with getting him neutered but will have to nagg db about that one. If I could afford it right now I'd pay to get it done for him.

Hopefully as of 10th Jan db will know more about having somewhere to stay and what will be happening with his circumstances and can go from there.

I really don't want poor dog handed over to somebody who doesn't have a clue Sad

Fingers crossed he can keep him.

Will let you know Smile

Dog does not have to be handed over to somebody who doesn't have a clue though does he? Breed rescue, and as mentioned Great Dane Adoption can help with larger breeds

NotShortImStockingStuffingSize · 01/01/2011 21:52

No sorry I didn't mean rescue I meant just a ranom anyone Blush

Don't want to hand him over to a rescue at the moment until I know there is no other choice and db cannot have him but whilst he is safe and well with ex then no need to contact them yet.

OP posts:
3cutedarlings · 04/01/2011 14:43

TBH i dont see you have any choice to hand him over to a rescue (who will neuter him prior to rehoming, home check ect ect) unless you have a close family member/friend that can offer him a home even then situations as you know will sometimes change, say for example the person you rehomed him to also lost their home, could your DB take him back? this is what a good rescue will do for the life time of the dog, honestly the best, most responsable and "only" way (im my opinion) to rehome this fella is through a breed specific (if possible) rescue :).
