Elderly staffie started to pee indoors

Our elderly staff Steve(12) has started to pee in our house He seems to not even try to go outside he just literally stands up and does a wee.
Is this an age thing or should we go to our vets?
Would like to add Steve has access to outdoors at all times( dogflap)

Vets I reckon. I think 12 is quite old for a staffy isn't it? Poor boy.
My staffy did this a few times but we had just had a baby - any big changes in Steve's life recently?
Wonderful name for a dog by the way Grin

In my experience, this is fairly common for old staffies (and maybe other dogs too, but I have only ever had staffs). I put it down to senility.
12 is a good age. One of mine is 12 soon and I am waiting for things to get worse with him as he has started behaving oddly.

It a great name, would like to take the credit but he came from the rescue home with it.Always gets a chuckle down the park when we call himGrin

We had another baby 10 weeks ago but he is used to babies in our house.
Other than this issue his behaviour hasn't changed usually when he isn't happy he sulks and doesn't eat but all is well in these areas.

He is as old as the hills though perhaps his body is realising thisSad

I'd go with vets too. Even if there is another reason for it - and change would be my suspicion first and foremost - I think it's important to rule out underlying illness asap as this is the one thing you may not be able to correct at a later point, heaven forbid.

Love the name Steve too, it's that of my best friend. I will have a SBT one day, when I am able, (when I sadly lose one of my 3 boys or win the lottery, that is) and I now want to call him Steve! :o

I've managed to get an app for this afternoon SO that is great! The nurse on the phone asked for a sample of his wee, Im going to have to stalk him with a cup aren't i?Grin

Blimey, getting a sample of dig wee? Good luck with that! Keep us posted on Steve's progress.

TheMonster · 30/12/2010 12:51

Lol I have had to get a sample of dog wee before, but from a bitch. I don't know which would be hardest: the cocking or the squatting.

waitwhat · 30/12/2010 14:48

Me and Steve just got back.

After having a feel of his stomach he thinks its a bit swollen and also because the pee sample i took in smelled extremely strong Vet seemed to think its some kind of uti.
He will do further tests on the wee but we have so antibiotics to take while we wait.

Also if you ever need to get a wee sample from a dog please remember to do what i didn't do and wear rubber gloves Blush

:o to not wearing rubber gloves.

Glad to hear that Steve's problem should soon be sorted and that he'll be feeling better very soon. Poor boy, not your fault at all of course but he's probably feeling a bit cruddy. If only they could talk, it would make all our lives so much easier.

Get well soon Steve and waitwhat, time for you to relax with a cuppa I think (after you've washed your hands of course!). :)

JaxTellersOldLady · 30/12/2010 16:14

I am now the expert at dog wee samples! When I first started doing them I got covered in it... but it gets easier. Grin

The vet can give you a little cup thingy that attaches to the test tube to make it easier. Wink

Hope it is just a UTI and the antibiotics help clear it up.

Love the name btw.

IlsaLund · 30/12/2010 20:56

Hope he is OK.

DH has devised a plastic cup on a stick lash up which he uses to collect a sample.

One of our dogs was practically incontinent when we had him (he was about 2yrs) and he had the worst case of UTI the vets had ever seen.

He is 99% OK now, but during the past 2 years we have collected a lot of samples.
