Can anyone recommend the best book on clicker training please? Have just read "Don't Shoot the Dog" by Karen Pryor - recommended on this forum and want to find a book now specifically related to clicker training puppies/ dogs.

Also, a question please about puppy training: how do you manage consistent training if your DCs can't absolutely match the methods (eg timing of clicker/ words used, response to behvaiour etc) you use yourself? How much will a puppy 'lose' what he's learned from the primary trainer (eg me) every time DCs inadvertently respond differently? Surely this must be a common problem in households with DCs and/or OHs as well?

Re the book, Karen Pryor has also written a clicker training book, the name of which I can't recall. It's very basic but that's all you need.

Can't help with the other query I'm afraid, but someone who can will be along soon I'm sure :)

The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson absolutely essential reading imo (another strong mn recommendation).

Facinating, funny and a good section at the back on how to progress all the main training goals using the clicker.

re the dc's doing training, I made sure that I did all the initial training of each individual task until our pup had them down to, I dunno, probably a 95% success rate. Then I did a child or a dh at a time. the dc are really good at clicking at the exact right time wheras treat distribution is a bit haphazard to I supervised that quite closely.

I don't think Elsie lost anything really from the different people training her. In many ways it made her concentrate more and now she knows to sit/down with the dds slightly odd hand signals as well as my my rather clearer ones.

Thanks for the recommendations. Have now ordered Karen Pryor's clicker training book and The Idiot's Guide. Already had and read The Culture Clash, thanks.

We have a pre-puppy course the day after tomorrow - witha local trainer coming to our house to talk us through everything about puppy owning and training.

As our puppy has still not been bred (after the failure of the mating from which we'd hope would produce him), I feel a little premature - but as I now realise how unprepared I was to have children, almost 10 yrs ago now, I think I can't do enough to be as prepared as I possibly can be for our puppy!

I'm even thinking of buying a clicker to try out pretend 'training' with the children to get us used to clicking at the right time! - or we could try training our cats, who currently rule the home!

Lucky lucky puppy coming to live with you. It is great that you are doing your research and getting your head around things in advance. Wish more people did this.

Do clicker train the cats - I trained mine to wee in the loo using a clicker, also to do high five and sit! go for it. Also if you can clicker train a cat your goldie will be much much easier.
