We have a lovely choc lab, who has turned into a "hair dropping machine"
Has anybody got any tips how to minimise this.........it's driving us mad!!

Do you have an animal dyson? hoover twice a day.
And get a furminator (super brush) and brush him EVERYDAY.

SpringHeeledJack · 10/12/2010 21:20

I feel your pain

was late out this morning after clearing up poo outside, and sweeping up huuuuge amounts of spiky little hairs inside (they stick to any upholstery like needles)

if some crazy dog geneticist can invent a bald dog that doesn't shit, please put me on the list for one

thighsmadeofcheddar-are animal hoovers really that different-do they work?
The brush sounds great.....is that the brand name (will search the web later)?

Well I have a fairly long hair GSD and he lives mostly inside so I live in a hair palace. We used to just have a cheapie hoover (£30 job) upgraded to the animal one and the difference was staggering.

Yes it's called the furminator. Tis great.

Vallhala · 10/12/2010 21:29

I have a Lab and 2 GSD, one of whom is a longhair and I second the Dyson and Furminator recommendations. Mine are invaluable.

SuePurblybiltByElves · 10/12/2010 21:29

I have just bought a pet hoover and tbh, it's still not cutting it. I have a long haired gsd X and he has that fluffy undercoat and a long topcoats. Sheds constantly. I've hoovered twice today and there are still clumps and a thin layer Xmas Grin
Worth getting the furminator then? For his type of fur?

thighsmadeofcheddar · 10/12/2010 21:31

Oh god yes Sue. We can fill a plastic carrier bag in one go with this brush.

elephantpoo · 10/12/2010 21:36

Just ordered a furminator on ebay........may have to save for the hoover Grin

My dog goes bald in winter, if that helps, Jack Grin

But as he's a short-haired dachs this doesn't entail huge amounts of shedding - DD and I leave more hair around the place TBH.

He does shit but so long as he's eating mostly Royal canine they are easy to pick up.
Just as well as today was the first time I'd done the back garden since the start of the freeze!

AVeryMerryPersonalClown · 10/12/2010 21:49

Got my furminator today and MY GOD did I get loads out of my walking bag of mess Labradoodle.

Now, if only I can get the little bugger to keep still and not try and eat it while I'm defuzzing him..

SuePurblybiltByElves · 11/12/2010 08:38

Have ordered one from amazon. I reckon it'l be cheaper than hoovering three times a day anway Xmas Grin

I thought the point of those doodle xcrosses was that they didn't shed - like poodles? Is yours a rebel?

SpringHeeledJack · 11/12/2010 21:32

how's the furminator on short haired dogs- eg staffies? anyone know?

I thought the shedding would slow down with the onset of cold weather, but my dustpan this morning told different story Grin

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 11/12/2010 21:54

Just a friendly warning; I used a furminator on my Border Collie, and she's now got baldish patches on her flanks. I may have been a little over-enthusiastic. Blush

On the plus side, she's not shedding any more... Grin

tibni · 12/12/2010 17:48

Furminator is great on my lab who is shedding like mad at the moment.

I use a rubber brush for the flooring - carpet and hard floors before I hoover and it is really effective - best brush I own.
