Any Vets still up?

I'm not sure what to post.

I am not long back from work and DH, before he went to bed said that PornDog had a bit of an 'episode' this evening.

He said that DS broke a mug upstairs and while he was dealing with it, sent DS downstairs with a bag full of broken Mug bits.

The next thing, he hears DS say 'No, PornDog, Bad Girl!'

He ran downstairs to find her struggling to get to her feet. She was frothing at the mouth and one pupil was dilated.

DS said that she 'trod on a bit of mug and fell over'.

DH seems to think she choked on something.

Before you all flame me, I have booked a vet appt, she seems fine now, a bit wobbly but definately herself.

Any ideas what this could be? She is only 5.

Sorry for the essay. I'm scared to leave her. She has been a bit odd over the last couple of days, had a couple of accidents, but I assumed she was coming into season.

aww your poor dog! (firstly for having the episode and secondly for being called porndog?! :s)

im not a vet technicaly but a vet nurse to ill do my best!

my dog has similar episodes and countless tests and exams havent found any reason for them, they seem to have started since he was hit on the head with a heavy ball (hes not the brightest dog!) and nothing seems to start them off, the just happen. hes fine afterwards after a bit of a sleep and a cuddle but they tend to last about 5 minutes.

although the difference woth your dog seems to be a. that shes been a bit funny for a few days and b. that your DH thought she choaked on something? and when you say 'accidents' do you mean walking into things or toileting acidents?

if shes usualy a bit wobbly as she comes into season then it could just be coincidence and the episode maybe stress induced from choaking, although this is unlikely id say

id mention all the things you said on here to the vet however i doubt all of them are at fault, its probly just coincidence that they all happened at once

it could be any number of things that caused it but try not to worry, my dogs absolutely fine apart from the odd episode and if it is something some serious like epilepsy for example theres plenty of things they can do for her and youll hardly notice it. soe of these could be quite expensive though so if moneys a problem try the PDSA and see what they can do :)

hope you find out what it is, if i think of anything ive missed ill let you know!

good luck!!

She obviously needs to see a vet, but it sounds like it was possibly a siezure of some sort. Sometimes siezures can be triggered around the time of a season, so if that's the case, spaying may help.

The vet might suggest running tests right away, or they might suggest you keep an eye on her and diary of similar episodes.

If it is/was a siezure and she has another, try and disturb her as little as possible and darken the room (close surtains, turn lights off) if you can. Move anything that she might hurt herself on out of the way and leave her until she comes round. Sometimes dogs can be very disorientated after a siezure and become aggressive, just stay out of her way if she does until she's more settled. It's normal and because the dog is frightened and doesn't understand what has just happened. Keep a record of how long the siezure lasts and what happens during it.

One of my girls has quite nasty siezures. Her back end goes and she tries to get up and falls over, at which point she is literally on the ground fitting, (almost like she is running whilst laying down)) foaming at the mouth and she wets herself. Afterwards she used to be aggressive (not in the slightest bit like her, she is the sweetest thing!) but is used to it now, so just a little disorientated and gets hot, so pants a lot, which is common. Her siezures never last very long, only a few minites and th evet couldn't find a cause. We decided not to medicate her yet as she was only having a fit every 3-6 months after the intial ones, which were every three weeks. She has startedhaving 'cluster' fits now though, where she still has long intervals in between, but with four fits in a day each time, so she is off back to the vets to decide where we go from here. It's awful seeing her in such a state. Sad

Thankyou both so much for your replies, sorry I've not been back, It's been a hectic day.

She seems much better today, she managed to catch a crow this morning Blushon her first walk, so she is obviously feeling back to normal.

The vet basically said the same as you, keep an eye on her, there is a possibility it is a one off but it will need further investigation if they become more frequent.

I hope both of your pooches are ok.

And don't worry, PornDog is just her MN name. Grin

Hey just a quick update.

PornDog had another really bad fit yesterday, we rushed her to an emergency vet appt.

They want us to keep a log, recommended a cat scan, but at £2k there is no way we can afford it, especially after shelling out £200 for yesterday's appt.

She was howling while fitting yesterday, can anyone please reassure me that this was involuntary and she wasn't in pain?
