If you have a dog AND a cat where do you put the cat's food?

Getting a dog soon and one thing I haven't figured yet is wher I will put the cat's bowl of food. It's currently on the kitchen floor but can't leave it there as dog will eat it! Grin Cat takes ages to eat her food, just nibbles at it through the day.

All I can think is to put it upstairs somewhere, where does everyone else put theirs?

on the other side of the closed baby gate. cat5 has sped up her eating since we got dog though, dog stares at her with intent.

MassiveKnob · 23/11/2010 17:27

dogs eat in the utility room. cats in the kitchen.

mustdash · 23/11/2010 17:30

Used to keep it on the worktop in the utility room, they now have a shelf on a deep bookcase. (But our dogs are very tall). The other side of the stair gate didn't work for us because the dog just jumped it.

TheLogLady · 23/11/2010 17:36

all eat together and ispend 15 minutes yelling NO. LEAVE IT. every meal time. why i don't just put them somewhere else i don't know.

TheLifeOfRiley · 23/11/2010 17:39

Yes I think my dog would jump the safety gate if there was a bowl of food at the other side of it! Grin

Maybe my cat will eat less leisurely when there is a threat to her food bowl, she's always been the same though, doesn't eat much and eats slowly (I wish I could say the same about me)!

I guess I will need to test where I can put it once the dog is home with us.
I have: kitchen - door - small lobby - door - bathroom. So I could put the cat in the bathroom (with food on deep windowsill) and lobby and the dog in the kitchen, that might work!

Under our bed Blush

It is only the dried stuff (hoping that makes it a little less horrible Grin).

ditavonteesed · 23/11/2010 17:44

I did consider the bathroom

VivaLeBeaver · 23/11/2010 17:51

Cat food is in the utility room. Door has some sting looped over the handle and then atatched to the wall so the door can't be opened more than a cat width unless we unloop the string. Cats can go in and out, dog is too big to.

arfasleep · 23/11/2010 17:56

Can picture Viva's dog in scooby-doo style squeezing its head through door Grin, or Riley's leaping the babygate 'FOOOD!!' My cat gets hers on utility room unit, far away from edge to prevent hopeful jumping of dog! Used to hear a clatter of plates every time dog was successful.

beautifulgirls · 23/11/2010 20:01

Cat food on the landing upstairs, dog not allowed upstairs so cat free to get his food as and when without pressure.

Vallhala · 23/11/2010 20:40

Used to be on top of the fridge freezer, which the dogs couldn't reach. Since I moved to a house with an integrated fridge=freezer rather than a freestanding one I've discovered that the dogs aren't actually interested in the cats' food anyway.

catinthehat2 · 23/11/2010 20:45

The dogs are lying to you.

They've either found where you hid the main sack of catgrub or they've got your credit card and have been ordering off the internet behind your back.

Grin

both eat in the utility room. Dog has her food on the floor, cat has hers on the worktop.

pastaplease · 23/11/2010 20:51

The cats are fed when the dog's out. It's the only way for us!

Onlyaphase · 23/11/2010 21:00

I do what Vivalabeaver does, only with a long latch handle not string. Wish I'd though of string.

pastaplease · 23/11/2010 21:39

You can buy boxes which attach to the wall - the cat food goes inside and there's a little cat-size door. Supposedly dog-proof, but probably not with my huge foxhound!

nannyro · 23/11/2010 22:57

my cat has a bowl in the utility room. the little window into the back garden stays open 24/7 for her to come and go as she pleases. we then have a cat flap in the door (which leads to the dining room)

magnolia74 · 23/11/2010 23:01

on the kitchen side which i clean every 2 fucking seconds HmmGrin

smoggii · 27/11/2010 20:58

It doesn't matter where you put it your woofy will get it! You just need to keep an eye on how much your cat is getting and how much extra doggy is getting so you can balance it's food accordingly.

Our dog eats when we put her food down so her dish gets cleaned immediately after. The cat eats about half her sachet when you put it down then goes back for a bit more later. Bella is a bit of a velcro dog so we know when she's sneaking off to eat Pumpkin's food and if she gets caught she gets a bit of a telling off - she know very well it's not her bowl.

If you can't keep a constant eye on your dog like we have to, then a raised surface for the cat food might be an idea.

nooka · 28/11/2010 04:59

Our cats have their food on to of a (low) bookcase in our living room, an the dog has his in the kitchen. One of the cats likes to eat his food sometimes Grin They all get dry food, mostly because they are all inclined to graze.

Novusleaf · 28/11/2010 12:23

Shelf in utility room. Dog not allowed in there, and so far he hasn't gone in (though nothing really to stop him), but it's only been 3 days, and he is attached to my hip virtually.

How are we going to stop him eating chicken food though, once he's used to them and we let them free-range again?

vjg13 · 28/11/2010 13:09

I don't think it's just the chicken food you need to worry about being eaten. Grin One of my dogs will eat the poo too and they would both LOVE to eat a chicken.

booyhoo · 29/11/2010 16:07

on top of the tumble drier in the cupboard under the stairs. added bonus of slightly warming the cat food Grin

ScaredOfCows · 29/11/2010 17:24

Both are fed together in the utility room. The dog isn't allowed to touch the cats food, so he doesn't.
