My DH would like to get a dog for DS 4. I have never lived with dogs and am a bit on the fence about the whole thing. He is looking at breeds like old english bulldog. I would like some thing with short hair.
Any ideas?

The thing is, once you've taken on a rescue dog and been told lies and experienced it savaging another dog as with Fifi or attempting to savage your child as with mine you suddenly become a lot more cautious to the idea and start thinking about this dog could have slipped the net.

Dogs behave differently in a kennel environment and whilst you say you foster, a lot of dogs are in traditional kennels and the staff don't really, properly know their temperaments.

You can't blame me and fifi for how we feel.

I do take on rescue puppies so i'm not all bad!

Regarding the last paragraph, i didn't lie with my reasoning for returning. I don't try and foist blame in any area of my life.
The dog might not have appeared child aggressive in the kennel but i assure you 100% he was.

I wasn't accusing YOU of lying, sorry that it may have read as if I was. Blush I was saying that it happens and IME it's just as often that the owner will be being disparaging of their dog than will be covering up the dog's bad points, if not more so.

Your comments are sadly true of the minority of rescues, I admit. A rescue I know of only last week put not just the good rescues at risk of suspicion and rejection last week, they did it to the unwanted dogs of this land too. Not content with putting an unneutered dog in with another dog and thus causing a nasty fight they then put a dog-aggressive large dog into a foster home straight from the pound...

... a foster home with a tiny Chihuahua.

Both dogs are now dead, the Chi killed and the bigger dog PTS as a result. :( Angry

So yep, i know it happens. We all went ape, they have closed their wensite and FB appeals page and none of the three main people or their assistants will ever get to work with us rescue volunteers and independent networkers again. We do tend to monitor each other as best we can.

I'm a tensy bit envious of you fostering pups, btw. Envy If I had room there would be a Staffie or ten here with my boys... :)

Some people do, but maybe those people lie to ensure the dog gets a place?
Fearful that if they were to say 'he moults too much' or something that they might not take the dog in or back?

That is very, very sad :(

I don't foster puppies. I would love to but i don't as dh thinks we have too many as it is!
Sorry if i made it sound like that.

We take on a lot of rescue puppies permanently and raise them as family pets.

Ah! I see!

So come on then, completely off topic, but whatcha got? Envy

Mostly staffies, a gsd and some mongrels

Vallhala · 30/01/2011 23:04

Oooh! I'm coming to your house, Spanky! :o

If you click on my name and then the photos link you'll see my long haired champagne GSD (he's the foster boy and is epileptic, poor boy), my shortcoat B&T GSD (nutter) and my 11 year old loyal shadow of a black Lab cross.

I do have kids too but they're a PITA, the dogs are so much better behaved! :o

Spanky100 · 30/01/2011 23:12

:)
I'll have a look now.

Spanky100 · 30/01/2011 23:14

They are beyond gorgeous!

Especially your long haired gsd!
