it's actually punctured her skin right thru on the back of her hand - does it need any attention?
SIL made her wash her hand with soap and anti bac

My dh will go maaaaaaaaaaaad when he comes home as he dislikes dogs & is totally ott with dd......
I am more of the - it's a puppy, it was squirted with water immeadiately(to reprimand it)and she was hesitantly putting her hand down and then snatching it back quickly as it was being bitey.

(i wasnt there - they were kindly "babysitting")

I don't think she needs anything. A tetnus maybe? Call your Gp on monday and check, but I'm sure it will be fine.

wrt the puppy though, I'm with you. It's just what they do. If dd was moving her hand quickly the pup will have thought it was a game.

I'm not sure I'd be squirting a puppy with water though. Surefire way to a nervous adult imo. Tell sil a better way to deal with it is either sqeak/yelp the way a litter mate would or immediately remove attention until the pup is calm. They soon learn.

Tetanus jab lasts 10 years I think, so she should still be covered from the 5 in 1 as a baby.

Sazisi · 06/11/2010 21:14

Sorry, it's also in the booster they get age 4/5 isn't it Blush

Agree re. it's a puppy and still learning what's acceptable. Toddlers bite too

Why was she allowed that close to a pup? And allowed to play with it in way that led to her being bitten? I'd be pretty reluctant to leave her (DD) with those babysitters again. How old is your DD?

alfabetty · 06/11/2010 21:26

Sorry OP, what you are asking about is the tetanus etc. My post sounded a bit unhelpful. But you asked about the puppy and punishing it - the point I was making is that the owners should be being extra, extra vigilant around a pup.

Hope your DD is OK Smile

Poor puppy - squirting with water is a sure fire way of making it an unpredictable adult. It is learning bite inhibition (google it) which is a vital part of it's growing up.

The blame must lie with the people caring for the pup - they should have been more vigilant to ensure snapping at hand games never get started. The quick movement of a hand being snatched away is absolutely certain to make a puppy chase it with its teeth.

I am sorry for your DD who has been nipped - I expect the mark will be fine as long as it's kept very clean. How old is she? If she's old enough, maybe a little bit of learning about puppies and dogs and how to behave with them?

she is nearly 12 - she wasn't afraid but she has long fingers and pulled her hand away quickly. I think the dog thought it was a toy and chomped down.
Its a first dog for SIL & family - they are clueless and were told by dog trainer friend (who is customs dog handler) to spray water in face to discourage.
She was playing fetch and the dog was bringing the toy back.
Its a lovely little think but totally out of control! was attacking myfeet as I walked and poops everywhere in the house........
DD has learnt her lesson and will be a bit less flappy handed and more firm.
I see this going the same way as our first puppy - we got one when sis and I were 12 and 14 - we LOVED it but played in a very teasing way all the time - resulting in hilarious yet out of control dog... not good.
thanks for the help/reassurance
