We're thinking of getting a puppy. It won't be an expensive pedigree - probably a mongrel. Can anyone give my a very rough figure of how much pet insurance would cost?

why don't you get some online quotes?

it varies depending on what cover etc you would need.

Most companies will do online quotes in minutes. Just make up the stuff you don't know to get the rough estimate on price.

Can do but was hoping for a quick answer doesn't have to be very accurate Smile

My mutt is insured with PetPlan for £17 a month.

You can get it loads cheaper than that, but my vet will only take payments direct from PetPlan, so I went with them because I wouldn't ahve a £3k to pull out of a hat and then claim back if the worst happened.

Al1son · 23/10/2010 11:22

Thank you DooinMeCleanin!

I could never pull £300 out of a hat never mind £3000!

I think I can manage that as a regular figure along with all the other little figures which no doubt add up to a not so small one!

Thank you!

Avoid Marks and Spencers insurance. Our payments have more than doubled despite not claiming

exexpat · 23/10/2010 11:26

Bear in mind that most pet policies make you pay quite a large excess before you claim - I'm currently with Sainsbury's pet insurance, and have to pay the first £75 of any claim; I think the last insurance policy (direct line) it was £70. So so far I haven't actually claimed for anything as annual jabs and neutering are not covered, and the couple of minor things he's needed treatment for (bee sting, skin problem) have cost around the £70 mark.

Also watch out as some of the cheaper policies have an annual limit on claims which is fairly low.

exexpat · 23/10/2010 11:29

Also - bearing in mind what notnearlyas blond just said - you need to shop around every year as a lot of them will slap on huge increases every year even if you don't claim. That's why I changed from Direct Line, it's not just M&S, I'm sure they all do it, just like most house and car insurers - they'll charge what they can get away with and just rely on people being too trusting and/or lazy to shop around each year.

Al1son · 23/10/2010 12:16

Thanks everyone. I'll be sure to shop around. My mum has access to Which online so I'll get her to look for their best buys too.

I was hoping that Cooperative did pet insurance because they do our house insurance and have been absolutely amazing about a recent claim and our renewal premium didn't go up!

Now I just have to find the right animal and find the money for the dog crate etc!

I'm with Argos and pay £25 a month for my pedigree puppy. Not sure if pedigrees cost more to insure.
He is covered for £7K a year and for lifelong conditions too should they occur. WE have to pay the first £60 excess but they will cover the rest and usually pay the vet directly.

Having insurance is a must if you have a dog. Vet fees are so expensive.

Al1son · 23/10/2010 17:49

Paying the vet directly would be a big plus. I think we'd cope with £60 if needs be and hopefully that wouldn't be too often. Thanks.

Lots of companies will pay the vet direct, but a lot of vets want payment upfront and will only wait for claims from a few select companies, so you should check with the vet you intend to use before you decide.

kid · 23/10/2010 17:57

i checked with my vet (after I got pet insurance) and they said they would take payment direct from insurers. I haven't had to claim yet, but I do hope they are true to their word.

BubblesMyBubbles · 23/10/2010 17:58

Petplan seemed to be the best for me, even though a little more expensive. BUT please get 'for life' cover. If you dont then any illnesses/treatments you may need will only be covered for a year, after that you will have to pay for any further treatment.
I have a cat, and she is insured in this way for 17 per month. (excess is £70)

Al1son · 23/10/2010 22:00

Thank you. I had no idea you could get 'for life' cover. I am so glad I started this thread.
