I'm getting an American Bulldog, note definitely not a pitbull, pup soon, and I'm wondering if a harness,or leash and collar would be more appropriate for him.

Which do you use with your dog? And if you use a leash and collar, which type of collar do you use?

TIA

AH HA! So you're making him yours are you?

Good on ya, he counds scrummy from what you said. :)

To answer your question, imho it depends on how well he walks on a lead and how well behaved he is when another dog/cat or whatever passes by. My big b&t Shep wears a harness - he looks a bit of a wuss in it but I find it affords me more control than a collar and lead or even a Halti because he's still a bugger on a lead for the first ten hours minutes. Even so I carry a slip lead in my pocket and am ready to put him on that too should I need to because he's a strong, albeit friendly bugger.

My other Shep and my Lab cross, far better on the lead, both have smart collars and leads. I shy away from the more modern quick release plastic clip type in favour of a traditional buckle style as I'm always concerned that the clip style might undo one day when I need to hold on to them tight.

Whatever you choose, have a wonderful time with your new pal.

Thankyou for the advice. It's very helpful.

He is going to be ours, though I won't quite believe it until he's here, worried she'll change her mind again.

I'll put some pics up on my profile later.

We use a harness for our labrador because he does still pull a bit and he would choke himself on a collar.

I would go with a harness for any of the brachiocephalic breeds but esp bulldogs, because of their narrow tracheas (windpipes) as I don't like the idea of putting pressure on that area unnecessarily with a collar and leash, especially as their breathing is already compromised. Hth

We have 2 Rottys. Leash & collar if OH is walking them but harness for me. I feel safer.

I use a Halti, on a Rott/Dorgue Bordeux, it is brillant, he was a struggle for me to hold at one point as we weigh about the same but the Halti has made massive difference and I feel that I hardly ever put pressure on it.

Good luck with American Bulldogs, the ones I have met are lovely.

I used to use a lead, collar and halti combination for Loofa, but he spent most of his time trying to remove the halti and getting himself covered in mud horse poo which was a PITA to get off.

I now use a collar and lead and he walks perfectly.

Madame has a collar and lead and if I need to will use a halti.

It really is whatever works for you.

Thankyou all for the advice.

We've had him for just over a week now,and he's lovely though very hard work.
He has a lot of bad habits that we need to work on,but he does learn fast. He's already learned to ignore the cat, even if it runs away from him.

We have bought him a harness. He doesn't seem to pull so much when on that,as he does when on his collar and lead, though still needs some work.
