greyhounds needing a home ..

Hello everyone, my DH has been offered a job in Italy which is basically too good to refuse: the only negative side of this move is that we need a new home for our beloved greyhounds (brother and sister, good as gold, great with children - we have DS aged 2 - 9 years old and fit as fiddles but lazy too!). Initially DH's company provide (non-pet friendly) housing but my ideal is that once we're over there and have found somewhere I can come back and take the dogs with us, but for the interim at least I need a foster home for them. i am more than willing to pay for their food - I just want them to be somewhere warm and with kind people. I have contacted greyhound rescue who are willing to help if we're really stuck, but i thought the power of Munsnet might be able to help...anyone any ideas?we are in Cornwall but are willing to travel to the right place. obviously all help greatly appreciated! thank you.

How long do you think it would be for?
I would love to help but maybe too much as i already have a greyhound and a jack russell (Plus 4 DC!).
I'm in Somerset so not a million miles away!

yikes Gruesome - thank you but surely you have your hands full already?! (ideally it would not be for too long - am optimistic that a new home in Italy will be relatively simple to find but that might be crazy-talk for all i know about renting property in Italy! we have housing when we arrive for four months so certainly no longer than that.) i really appreciate your reply though - encouraging! you're very kind to consider it with so many two and four-legged ones as it is!

Cellini, have you contacted Greyhound Rescue West of England, or South West Sighthounds?
You could also get very quick specialist help if you post on Sighthounds Online forum - there is a dedicated section there for dogs needing homes.

I think it would also be fair if you indicated that you were willing to pay for food, but also for vets bills/insurance etc, plus a foster allowance. It also helps if you give a clearer indication of the likely timescale/microchip issues/what happens if things go wrong and so on.

It might also be worth trying Cinnamon Trust as they are based in Cornwall, but to be honest, I am reluctant to recommend a lot of the usual charities as they are mostly bursting with emergency cases.

As your dogs are so good with kids and so on, you could also consider placing an advert either in your local press, local shops (esp animal feed shops) or your local mums/toddlers groups.

Sadly this is a very common reason for dogs to be up for rehoming with charities, but illustrates perfectly that rescue dogs are often given up reluctantly and are "tested" with kids and usually wonderful family pets.

Cellini, what is your timescale? Also helpful for rescue cases - need to know how quickly the dogs will be homeless. Finally, what is the age of the dogs?

For god's sake ask rescue to carry out a homecheck on your behalf if you decide to rehome privately. It's all too easy for dogs to end up in the wrong hands, where they could be horribly abused and/or misused.

Val (Rescuer).

thanks guys - Val, you hit my fears on the head; the local rescue actually suggested i advertise publicly that i was willing to pay but i just think that will attract all sorts but not necessarily those with dogs' best interests at heart...am hoping word-of-mouth locally will be my answer.

thanks again everone.

4 months wouldn't be too much trouble i don't think. Kids (ages 13-6) all think it would be great lol!

{Just as i typed that, Mickey, our Greyhound, just stole DD2's sausage off her plate!}

We got Mickey 2 1/2 years ago from RGT. He is 7 now.
Patch, our Jack Russell, we got in April. He was a friends dog but they wanted to get rid of him because he kept chewing things! He hasn't chewed anything since we took him on. I think it was to do with lack of attention and walks! He will be 2 in April.

We live in a rural area with lots of fields nearby and i am generally home all day apart from taking and picking kids up from school.

So, happy for you to consider us if you don't find anyone else or any other option. [hsmile]

Gruesome, that's so kind. I'm going to give it another couple of days to see if anyone in the immediate vicinity comes back to me, but then i may well be in touch! they are good with other dogs - Danny is a bit timid with alsations (he was attacked by one earlier this year - no damage luckily, but he turns tail if he even sees one now) but our friend frequently bring their dogs round and we've been to other peoples' homes with them and they're so passive. generally, they're just looking for floor-space to lie down on and Danny in particular will do anything for strokes! that did make me chuckle about your grey sausage-stealing though! i guess sometimes temptation is too great!!

have another think and like i said I'll be in touch one way or another in a couple of days, but once again, really so lovely of you to offer - greyhound-loving people tend to be amongst the best in my experience!

Smile Mine prefers sofa space! He has taken over one sofa for himself lol! Not much floor space when kids are playing TBH.
Mickey is a bit of a food thief when he gets the chance. He is just so darn quick.
My DS2 said 'Oh no, 3 lots of Greyhound wind'! Grin Luckily Mickey isn't too bad but the Grey my mum had was terrible!

GruesomeShellChillingTortoise · 19/10/2010 22:12

Meant to add, happy to help if i can. Smile They are such beautiful dogs. If i had a bigger house i would adopt another one.
