Poor puppy has broken his leg :(

Well our little puppy Rolo has broken his leg :( The ligament and bone has come away from where it's supposed to be apparently and he'es having an op today for it. He's only 4 months now and will need to be crated for 4-6 weeks to recover!

He's going to be in overnight, obviously hoping it all goes well as he's under the general at the moment. It's a really quick operation according to the vet which is good and he said he's the leading one in the country to do it.

It happened yesterday while he and our other dog were at a kennel overnight. Dh has to stay in hospital so we arranged for the dogs to go in just overnight as I'm 30 weeks pregnant, have pneumonia and 3 little ones and would have found it too hard to cope with them both. It's a reputable place and looked lovely so we had no concerns about that. Picked them up yesterday and he couldn't put weight on his back leg. Called the vet and they said to bring him down this morning so we did. Took him to another branch to be x-rayed and we've just found out what the problem is :(

Any ideas as to what we can do/give him to keep him occupied for so long while he recovers? The vet said he has to be literally crated for this long as he could make it worse, if he was older it could have left him lame he said but he should make a full recovery.

Poor little thing. He is so good natured too, it says a lot for his temperament that he didn't try and go for us or the vet when he was being looked at and his leg moved even when it was broken and the vet has said he would have been in a lot of pain :( He's a staffie cross and black with brown brindle bits on his back, hence the name.

I posted when we got him but haven't got any photos off the camera yet!

A kong and a puppy nyla bone? Are you allowed to lift him out to pet him?

Vallhalloween · 12/10/2010 15:22

Kongs, nylon bones, tugs, a teddy made especially for dogs with no eyes/noses to pull off and eat?

Whatever you give him, ensure that you rotate toys so he doesn't become bored of them. I wouldn't advise lifting him out to pet him but continuing to socialising him by stroking and just sitting with him and talking to him is very important.

Poor brave little mite, I hope that he is better as soon as possible.

CheeseandGherkins · 12/10/2010 15:31

Yes he said we can get him out for cuddles but not too much and try to keep him quiet and definitely no jumping. We'll have to literally carry him outside for a wee etc too as he said it's so important that he doesn't jar his leg.

We're planning on keeping it quiet for him at first and not disturbing him so he can rest but obviously we won't be leaving him on his own or anything.

Have a kong and some squeaky toys, few cuddly ones too but maybe a bigger kong would be good too? I had thought of those toys you can buy but then that would mean using his paws I think and so probably not the best idea. Thanks for the ideas, will definitely pick up some more as we don't want him to get bored. Seems like such a long time for a little puppy to have to stay crated for too :( He was really, really brave, such a lovely puppy he really is.

Sorry missed a few words out there, I'd thought of the mental agility toys you can buy,

He's had the op now and is doing OK. Need to call in the morning to check on him as the general could affect him overnight and he'll also be on strong painkillers :(

C&G If you have a couple of Kongs try stuffing the end of one with something like cream cheese and then filling with small dog biscuits the again fill the other end with a soft spread of some kind. Other option is to fill with a weak gravy solution and freeze like a doggy ice lolly - things to lick and keep him entertained.

minimu1 · 12/10/2010 18:55

SO glad that he is doing ok. All you need right now by the sounds of it.

If he is small can you attach his crate to a pushchair or something and get him out and about seeing things. (yes you may get named the mad doglady but who cares!) I had to crate a collie for 6 weeks and his daily rides out and about certainly saved my sanity. Make sure the crate is small so he can not jump around if he sees anything interesting. Also car trips take him in his crate to the supermarket car park etc dogs love the comings and goings keeps them amused for a while.

Oh sorry forgor about sick OH you pregnant and poorly and other dc's - wish I could help!

My sisters puppy broke his leg when he was abouth that age. It was so sad to see crated for so long but it was essential to his recovery.

He is now 15 months old and absolutely fine. He is a staff cross too, with a shar-pei.

phipps · 12/10/2010 19:51

How did he break it at the kennels and didn't they tell you?

CheeseandGherkins · 12/10/2010 20:37

Thank you, some great ideas! I'm sure we'll be able to get him out in his crate some way or another, would carrying him be ok? He weighs 9 kilos so still fairly small. Car trips are definitely doable too miminu.

kid our other dog is a staffie cross shar pei and also about that age!

phipps they think he did it while out in the run with our other dog apparently. They didn't tell us he'd broken it as they thought it was just a sprain, they suggested we take him to the vets in a few days time (cynical side of me says after the 72 hours he is covered by their insurance for) but we knew last night that he wasn't right. Picked them up about 5pm and called the vet after that last night as it was clear he wasn't right in himself. They said to wait until this morning and it wasn't until the x-ray that they said it was a break. I think what he has is called a tibial crash separation and the op was to put a pin in to attach it again. They said part of the bone had come away/snapped along with ligament, the vet called it a footballers injury!

The phone just rang and thought it was the vet saying that something was wrong, thankfully it wasn't, so on edge tonight.

I would be wondering if they should pay some of the vets costs.

I hope is okay tonight and home soon.
