Puppy (11 weeks) jumping and chewing clothes

Hi all, we have an 11 week old female lab. She's usually very responsive and is learning to sit well etc. She's developing a nasty habit of jumping and biting at our clothes. Anything that dangles (dressing gown cord, waist band tie) is particularly attractive, however trouser leg and sleeves also get it. I do say a firm "no" and try to turn my back on her and ignore it (hard with a lab dangling from your sleeve or trouser leg) but she's almost zoned out and into a tug of war. It's pretty distressing for the children and I'm fed up of having holes in my clothes. Do you have any suggestions?

distract with treats. i use cheese. handy if you can keep a pouch on you all the time while she is still being trained. as soon as she gets something she isn't allowed in her mouth you show her a treat and when she drops the object you say "good drop it" or whatever phrase you are using for drop/give.

withjumoing you have to turn your back and ignore. when she goes back onto all fours, praise with a 'yes' or 'good' and reward with a treat. she needs to get the idea that four on the floor is a good place to be and that jumping gets no attention, not even a 'no'

also, i teach my ds to 'be a tree' when our pup jumps. he turns his back, folds his arms and tucks his head down so no eye contact. it works very well. the pup sits almost immediately when ds does this.

btw, i supervise all contact my pup has with the dcs so he rarely gets the chance to jump or barge them (i call it barging, what i mean is when he tries to lean his bodyweight against them, to claim their space- i don't allow that at all) if i see him attempting this i get between them and he usually moves away.

Would it be any consolation to say they grow out of it? Smile My golden retriever did this (actually, we're still working on the jumping up enthusiastically at strangers in the woods!) but she stopped all the clothes biting and nipping at about 4 months. Now she just chews shoes while we are asleep so we have to take them upstairs with us! So far I have lost a pair of leather boots, some lovely slingback sandals, dd's Converse, slippers and numerous pairs of flip-flops and Crocs(her favourites!)

Good job I love her Grin

Get a tug toy and teach her to play tug only when YOU give the cue "Get it". In the process, teach her to "drop" and "Leave".

That way:

You have a great game to use as a reward for good behaviour/obedience;
A way to distract her/redirect her when she's doing something you don't want;
An outlet for the tugging she obviously loves;
A great way to expend energy;
A source of fun that involves YOU (as opposed to her finding the best fun away from you).
