Our lovely choc lab (2 1/2) that we've had for 22 days (4th Sept) came into season on 6/7th Sept.
She's been very good with it, though she's obviously finding it frustrating to be walked away from other dogs (she loves to play) and kept on her lead.
From Thursday (23rd) the bleeding has really slowed down, almost stopping.
DH and DD have been desperate to take her for a proper walk, so this morning they set off EARLY to the moor for a nice walk.
Dog loved it-swimming, running, playing, etc.
They met noone.
Literally walking back to the car, dog bolted towards another dog and they started to mate :(
Husband chased towards the dogs, shouting to the couple stood nearby (thinking HE was theirs) to stop them.
DH finally got there and dragged our dog away.
Turns out this dog followed the couple and their dogs from the car park, where there was no sign of anybody:(
Could our dog be pregnant. The mating was "intermittant" according to DH. ie. he jumped on and off a couple of times, very quickly.
Will a vet spay her straight away, or will we have to wait and find out if she's pregnant or not?
We planned to get her spayed anyway, but you're supposed to leave it for 3 months after season aren't you? That plans out of the window now I'm assuming?!

Yes, she can be pregnant. Even if they do not tie. To put it bluntly, you should not be letting her off lead.

Your vet can administer a misalliance injection (like a morning after pill). Call them & ask when they would need to see her.

You need to get her to the vet ASAP for a mismate jab. Alizin is thought to be the best by people I know and you need two injections, done apart.

I know of peoplewho have had the one jab version and still had a pregnant bitch.

Thevet might agree to spay her in the circumstances. It is possible, just more risks of complications. You'd need to get her spayed ASAP after a mismate jab anyway as it increases the risk of pyometra, which could kill her.

Yes she can be pregnant I offer my clients in this situation two choices if you want to keep the bitch entire use Alizin (99% effective) or if you were going to spay her any way do it in three weeks time then it can't happen again.

Thank you for your replies.
Lizcat-Will be calling our vet in the morning to arrange spaying in 3 weeks. Will she need the injection Alizin too?
Bella32-Just out of interest, when do we know she's not in season any more? Not that we'll need to know as it won't be happening again.
It's just that people have said roughly/give or take 3 weeks. She was 18 days on Thursday and bleeding has all but gone (1/2 small drops yesterday and not noticed any today).
We hope that we are responsible people (she's been kept on a lead/out of reach of other dogs), and followed all advice given. We thought she was finished, hence the walk with no lead.

When the bleeding stops, that doesn't mean the bitch is no longer fertile, it means she has moved into oestrus and is starting to ovulate. This stage can last over a week but all bitches vary in their cycles so I suggest you ask your vet for further advice.
