i have sherley's worming syrup for puppies and kittens. it says on the leaflet to treat at 4,6,8,10 and 12 weeks and the every two to three months thereafter. but the dosage insructions only go as far as 5.4 kgs. WB is 12 weeks tomorrow and when i wormed him at 10 weeks he was 8.6kg so i worked it out following the same pattern as is on the leaflet. this is the instruction.

up to 0.9kg =1.1 ml
0.91-1.8kg = 2.2ml
1.81-2.7kg = 3.3ml
2.71-3.6kg = 4.4ml
3.61-4.5kg = 5.5ml
4.51-5.4kg = 6.6ml

so last time i gave him 11ml

he now weighs 11.2 kg so am i right in thinking he should get 14.3 mls? sorry if this is really stupid. i just don't want to dose him too much or too little.

It may be that it isn't really suitable for his size, though I can see what you are doing makes sense.

Tbh that sort of pet shop brought wormer isn't really recomended, they arn't really up to much.

I would get some Panacur or Drontal instead.

I agree with the above, sorry. You may as well not bother to worm him than use a pet shop product.

You can buy either drontal puppy suspension or Panacur 10% liquid over the counter at one of the local vets. These are properly tested and known to be effective.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/09/2010 14:20

You can also get Panacur paste online, I use Petremedies or Chemistdirect. I prefer Panacur for puppies as it is less likely to make them sick (ime). I then use Drontal once they are over 6 months (again I buy online).

midori1999 · 23/09/2010 14:35

I have never had any sickness using Drontal, even from two weeks old. I prefer it as it is just one dose, rather than over three days, so easier and less stressful for young pups.

I use panacur 10% for in whelp bitches though, but then prefer milbemax from 6 months ish.

thank you both, does it matter if i order some now online but it doesn't get here for a few days? it is two weeks tomorrow since lat worming treatment.

No, it will be fine to wait a couple of extra days.

I am not the best person to ask about fleas as I prefer to use natural methods, however that is easyish for me as I have only ever had very smooth coated dogs and nearly all hard floors.

Much harder to carry out if you have a big shaggy dog and/or carpets.

booyhoo · 23/09/2010 15:26

what do you mean natural methods? he is a golden so will be longish haired when grown.

I didn't realise it was a Golden you had Booyhoo, where is he from if you don't mind me asking?

I usually use Stronghold for fleas as it does earmites too and also fox mange. A couple of vets have mentioned they are seeing resistance to Frontline. I am not sure on puppy use though, I have only used it on older dogs.

booyhoo · 23/09/2010 16:27

we got him from a friend in annacloy. he owns both parents. i will check out stronhold for puppies then thanks mid.

I flea comb every day, use a monthly natural (neem oil and other oils) repellent, hoover daily and wash and tumble all dog bedding weekly.

I have rarely seen a flea.

I am personally anti (as much as possible), chemicals for pets.

However I am well aware that many do not share my views and realise I am in the lucky position (as regards grooming) of having a dog with very little coat. It would be darn near impossible to go over a golden with a flea comb on a daily basisGrin.

booyhoo · 23/09/2010 16:42

yes, i was just trying to work out how i would fit in all those hours of combing everyday!!! Grin
