How do I tell if it's a tick?

Just petting my 4 month old puppy and noticed he has some bare skin above his eye looking a bit swollen, and a small orange lump in the middle of it. I googled ticks and it says they are grey? Also he has had advocate so shouldn't that stop ticks? I am not sure if he seems unsettled - is whining at the moment which is unusual, but could be because I have been holding his head to get a good look, and am now ignoring him googling ticks!

Advocate doesn't treat ticks - but Frontline does.

Ticks start off grey but fill up with blood and change colour.

Do not try to pull it out - you'll almost certainly leave the mouth parts in the skin and a very nasty abscess can result. Get some frontline and it'll fall off.

It depends which type of tick it is, around here we have the regular sheep ticks which are grey, we have two types of deer tick the medium sized orange ones and the really tiny white ones. As Bella said advocate doesn't kill ticks, but frontline and Advantix do.
