My bitch was mated this morning!

She went to the studs yesterday and they called to say there was a supervised succesful mating this morning with a 12 minute tie.

Am gutted I wasn't there but they wait until both the bitch and dog are ready and obviously I can't be there 24-7.

My excitememnt is overcrowded by the fact she isn't home yet though and won't be until after another mating in 2 days time and also the fact her sister is missing her so much!

But it is exciting! I need to contact all the potentail new owners and my list and tell them a mating has occoured and check if they are still interested.

I feel like I have a million and 1 things to do and its not even guarenteed she will be pregnant!

Thanks for posting that, Val. It's important that the message gets out. Living in Wales, we see far too many of the abandoned breeding bitches, treated like garbage or worse when they can no longer make money for their owners.

Thankyou for your concern but we have a 10 strong waiting list and thats before she was even mated. The stud dog owners (he is a highly sucessful show dog) also have lists of people wanting dogs sired by him so we will not be short of homes.

I am a KC registered breeder and I will only rehome pups with approved familes, I will have restrictions on my pups so they cannot be bred as KC registered dogs and part of the contract (although I know home contracts are not 100% legally inforcable) insists that if the new family cannot continue to look after the dog at any point in its life, be it 1 or 11, then the dog is to be returned to me and not sold on to anyone under sny circumstances.

I consider each pup MY responibility for as long as it lives.

So please try not to be concerned, this is not a case whre you need to be.

I have read the work you do Vall and really admire you for it.

Fair enough Toto, and thank you for the compliment. :) I hope that people are aware that I have respect for responsible breeders (as I've said to Midori, who breeds retrievers) but still I know... I was going to say I think, but no, I know... that there are too many dogs dying in pounds to justify breeding more.

However, we will not ever have legislation against breeding though god knows we need at least laws to monitor and have registered all breeders not just those with one or two litters every so often, as I hope you'd agree. Meantime I have to be grateful for the responsible ones at least.

One thing I must say though... you have a 10 strong waiting list, which is great and I'm genuinely glad. However, the rescue I volunteer for alone has about 70 dogs currently looking for homes... and there is no waiting list for those.

Fortunately those dogs will remain in the rescue until suitable homes are offered or for the rest of their lives, whichever comes first.

The hundreds of healthy, harmless dogs who are put to sleep each week in UK pounds are not so lucky.

For that reason alone, I hope and can only ask, if your girl has 5 puppies, you'll recommend a reputable rescue to the remaining five people on your waiting list. Whilst I appreciate that some will reject the idea out of hand, perhaps for want of the knowledge that I and Scuttle have, maybe just one will save a rescue dog's life.

Hence the link. Because not everyone knows what Scuttle and I do.

Its heart breaking :(

I would recommend a rescue to whoever is left over but in all honesty the dogs I breed very rarely end up in rescues,

There was a dog we noticed in a rescue in cheshire about 4 months ago, within about and hour I had freinds emailing and FBing messages about this dog and by the next day it had been collected by our Rescue team and Thomas is now happily settled in a new home.

I'm not saying people can breed these dogs and there will always be homes for them, thats ridiculous and pig headed, I just know that people on the list are looking for my breed and are very unlikely to find one in a rescue home.

But I agree that there are too many dogs needing homes and SOMETHING has to be done, I have no idea what though :(

I know that when I fell in love with my breed (10 years ago now) that I couldn't have any other dog, so it was near on impossible for me to get 'my' dog without someone breeding iykwim?

"the rescue I volunteer for alone has about 70 dogs currently looking for homes... and there is no waiting list for those. " that actually made me fill up :(

I hope that came across how I meant it to Confused

It did, me darlin', it did. :)

I guess you don't want to be outed as could be the case because yours are a rare breed, but I'm nosy fascinated to know what breed it is! Envy

I hope, small chance that it may be, that someone amongst your potential new owners will do as I did when I adopted my first GSD, which is to go off with a breed in mind and find instead a completely different one but one who was just perfect nonetheless... and that the dog they find is a rescue one and the breed unimportant.

Perhaps the answer is to tell them that! I dunno... :(

TotorosOcarina · 11/09/2010 23:37

No not a rare breed but a loved breed :) I have really only ever come a cross a few in rescues ever in years of being bessotted with them, but I must admit there is a steep, steep rise in people breeding them ot because of the love for them but because of the money Angry

I find it really hard to think about centres, especially as our neigbour has a rescue staffie, he wasn't rescued from a centre just found beaten and wandering with a broken leg :( and I swear to god, he is the most darling dog you would ever meet! And his owner adores him (to the point that this rather large burly man pushes him along in a dog buggy because the staffy has very bad hip problems - but he wants him to still go for walks!

Wish there were more good ownwers like him cause I can sure as hell bet there are many good dogs just left in those rescue homes :(

Vall is there anyway you could tell me where you volunteer and when my pups (if she has any) go to their new homes I would like to make a donation from each pup please x

Wow they sound like angels! Shock

I have bookmarked your page and will make a donation on behalf of each pup when it goes to its new home, if we are blessed with any :)

Have just watched your link Val and am lost for words really. Of course we all know this happens but I had no idea of the numbers. And those poor dogs in the bins Angry. What a horribly undignified end.

It reminded me of my poor dog who was PTS at the beginning of this year because he had incurable cancer yet these dogs are perfectly healthy. 5 days or 7, it is no time at all. Sad

My own pup is due to be neutered next week
