My wee westie was just about trained. She is 14 weeks old. Yesterday she managed to get out of her crate whilst I was at work. She had a great time chewing papers and pooing on the carpet. We have cleaned it all up but its as though she has forgot all her training. My DH is disliking the dog more and more. What can I do to train her.

PS she wasn't in her crate long.

Hi, lillybloom, I'm afraid I can't be of much help as I also have a new puppy 9 weeks old and although brilliant yesterday going to the door every time, today, so far, 5 wees on the kitchen floor. I heard vinegar in the rinsing water should help, but it didn't. I would think it was only because she managed to get out. Maybe go back to basics for the next few days. I would like to know your initial training tricks as 14 weeks sounds really good! Mine is a cockapoo and although lovely, I can see it is hard work, and just as everything was getting nice and quiet with the kids!

Another Cockapoo owner and he is 16 weeks old I only leave him out of the crate alone for 45 ins at a time and he is just clean, but has to rush out for a wee immediately. He is 99% house trained though last night forgot to ask to go out until it was too late. Just like children they occasionally get it wrong.

Hi lizcat, I only leave her in the crate at night with the door clipped, but during the day she just wanders in and out. She is still sleeping very lightly and wakes as soon as I stand up from the chair if I am in the same room as her. I left her one day for 15 mins and she yelped for 5 mins then stopped and was quiet when I got back. Today after her numerous accidents and washing the floor with vinegar in the water, which is supposed to help, it didn't seem to!, she yelped every time I went out of view. Was yours a light sleeper? With belle, she wees 3 times within the first 20 mins or so, is it a cockapoo thing? Any tips would be greatly appreciated as this is our first ever dog. What is yours name and sex?

Sorry, just read that it is a boy. Too much excitement at another cockapoo!

I have read that whilst they are young the biggest mistake you can make is to assume they are completely trained too soon. Think of it like potty training a toddler, blooming hard work and long! Grin I am very proud of Little Storm. He's 9 weeks old and has had 3 poop free nights in his crate in a row!! Grin whoooooo!!!

At her age she should be out in the garden on a lead every half hour or so, plus after playing or eating, and then rewarded for 'performing'!

also, make sure the back door isn't open all the time, there needs to be a clear distinction between inside and outside.

When you clean up, use bio washing powder as many cleaners contain ammonia which is likely to encourage her to go in the same place again. Don't be tempted to show any disapproval at all - you would risk ending up with a dog nervous about toileting in front of you, which you really don't want.

She's a baby, so you need to impress on your DH that it's a little unreasonable to dislike her for a training issue, however unpleasant it seems.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone

i think we have been a little spoiled with her to be honest as she is so good. DH isn't keen on having a dog so I can't blame him really I just want him to love her like we do.

She is back on track ladies. I think it was just a wee blip cos she got out the crate.

assumpta- we started off taking her out every hour to the garden and giving her a treat if she went.If she squated inside we would just lift her up and take her outside.( mid pee if necessery) She prefers pooing outside and took to that really quickly.Like Lassa says we kept the door closed but every time she went near it we would take her out side again. I was told to try set nap times just like a baby and given a wee routine to follow, taking her outside as soon as she woke up.we were also told to cover the crate and leave the radip on if we had to go out so she thinks we are still there. She took to it really well. We occaisionally still have puddles at the door if we don't get there in time but she is learning to bark now.

Bailey can usually pee loads for the first 20 mins after a sleep

Lillybloom - that's exactly like belle. She pees a little bit 3, 4, or 5 times first thing after being let out. I know not to expect a miracles, but I get quite frustrated with myself, when I turn my back for a nano- second, turn around, all seems well till I suddenly see my reflection in a little puddle. She usually goes to the back door and I have been closing it bit by bit during the day, and close it completely in the late evening, and nine times out of ten she wanders over to it on her own with one of us following. Do they eventually scratch at the door to signal they want to go out? Do you teach them this, and how so?
