Children's DVD/video guide to having a puppy?

Does anyone know if there are any good DVDs/ videos produced for children in the age 9 upwards range - that give good advice on puppies - how to look after them, what to expect, how to respond to their different behaviours etc?

My DCs and I should be getting our first puppy either towards the end of this year or even next yr and whilst I'm happy to read lots - especially on MN here (smile), they're likely to take in more info. from watching stuff on a screen!

The New Puppy Owners thread here on MN is really helpful to me but I wonder if there were some summary/ condensed version of how to have a puppy in the family, for children (or even beginner adults I suppose) that we could all watch - endlessly?

For example, neither of my DSs really knows that it's normal for the puppy to bite them and their things, to poo and wee all over the place nor how to react to specific puppy behaviour. Of course I'm talking to them a lot about things I read about this and when we meet dogs, I talk some more - but it's a bit like trying to prepare children for a new baby - it's still going to be a bit of a shock that what they get isn't a ready-made, fully trained playmate - but rather something that needs to learn and grow and be patiently trained.

As a vet and my father is a dog breeder I had talked a lot to my DD and she had experience with my dad's dogs of what having a puppy actually meant.

However, when it came to our own puppy arriving the only person DD (who is 6) listens to is the our instructor at dog training. DD has loved dog training and is very good at it. Our training school does go all the way to crufts level obedience, but at puppy and bronze level it encourages all members of the family particularly the children to be involved.
So sorry no advice on a book, but I would finding a training school that encourages children to be involved.

Thanks Lizcat. Maybe no one has made a video for children about what to expect when you get a puppy? Perhaps one of us on MN could do one and put it on Youtube?

Anyone else have any knowledge of such a thing perhaps from the USA even? A child friendly video/ DVD about your puppy's behaviour/ why it does what it does and how to help train it etc?

Would Gwen Bailey ever have made a short training video for adults with dogs, do you think?

Not a video, but you might find the Young Kennel Club site useful - they have a game for kids called Safe and Sound to teach kids in a fun way about how to be safe around dogs: www.ykc.org.uk/kids/safe-and-sound

All the videos I have might be a bit beyond some 9 year olds, though if they're 'into dogs' then it could be worth looking at some to see how you get on. Turid Rugaas's Calming Signals video is excellent for teaching you about how dogs use calming signals, which I think is useful and fun for kids to try to understand, but it definitely isn't targeted at kids.

Not strictly about training, though Mary Ray does a great job here - your kids might really enjoy the Episode of 'Faking It' (Management Consultant to Dog Trainer) - we loved it! You can watch it here www.channel4.com/programmes/faking-it/4od if you scroll down the page you'll find the episode.

My brother was 12 when we got a new (adult) rescue GSD, and although he was too young to walk her, he did do a positive, reward-based training class with her once a week, which helped them bond, and his confidence grew lots in handling her.

Many thanks, Laska Smile. That's very helpful of you. I'll have a look at the links you suggest.
