My local pet shop has run out of county valu Greyhound which i normally use and have nothing else in stock for greyhounds. Have phoned around a few local shops but no luck.
Only have enough until Monday.
Is they any other food i can use or any where online who send next day?

Pets at home do home delivery which is pretty quick. Check out their website for more details. Unless your grey is a working racer, no, they don't need specialist food. Ours are omnivores Grin but basic kibble is James Wellbeloved with additions to vary/boost diet such as sardines, eggs, chicken etc. To be honest if you were stuck for a day, you could even feed that awful tinned food, although you will need to wear a gas mask afterwards. And there's nothing wrong with cooked rice and a bit of chicken as that's what a lot of hounds have after a GA or an upset belly, or if they are very sensitive. I also know greys who eat poached salmon.

I make up a variety of home made "balls" if any of ours are either off their food, or to boost a foster's condition when they come in. You can make a version using porridge oats, soaked in evaporated milk to which you add cream cheese, wheatgerm, maple syrup, vegetable oil, raw eggs and minced turkey or chicken (whichever is cheaper). Make it up into balls and feed - great for adding condition. You can either feed it alone, or as a supplement. Hope this helps.

Thanks scuttle. Pets at home don't do it but have found a site that do and cheaper than pet shop. Will take 3-4 days though! Worried about changing from his usual food as he seems to do well on it. Good poos and almost no wind! Grin Unlike our JRT who can clear a room with his farts!

If you've found a food with good poos and no wind, don't change Grin!!!!!! If there's a little hiatus before it arrives, you might need that gas mask though....

Grin Hopefully it will arrive quickly!

Scuttlebutter those balls sound amazing, could you give slightly more specific quantities?

Would they freeze? Is the poultry mince raw? From what age could they be fed?

Scuttlebutter · 04/09/2010 21:38

Hi Wild, not sure about the age thing as have always had adult dogs rather than pups. Am sure you'll get an expert opinion on the pup thread though.

I buy a plastic bag of porridge oats, (value ones from supermarket) and pour about a third of the pack into a washing up bowl. Then pour over a whole large can of evaporated milk, and walk away. Open a bottle of good white Burgundy and pour yourself a glass - this bit is particularly important. Leave the oats/milk mix to absorb while you concentrate on the white burgundy. Sometimes I leave that stage to absorb overnight. When ready/bottle is empty, add a whole packet of full fat cream cheese (cheapest usually in Aldi), two eggs plus a slug of veg oil OR three eggs, a dash of maple syrup, a generous couple of heaped handfuls of wheatgerm, and a whole packet of fresh minced turkey or chicken (whicheveris cheapest/on special offer in supermarket). Mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon till you get a kind of gloop. You can either store this in the fridge while serving, or what I often do is make little patties with it, and put them into a plastic bag (lakeland pick a bag v good for this) and then into the freezer. You can then defrost a few as you need them. HOpe this helps.

I thought they fed them on mechanical rabbits?

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 06/09/2010 10:05

Thanks Scuttlebutter I will be trying that.

Just so I don't get it wrong can I double check that the poultry is raw not cooked.

Scuttlebutter · 06/09/2010 11:45

Yes, raw.

as an aside, our elderly greyhound now gets 'senior' dog food, with glucosamine. he adores it. if anyone has an old greyhound, i would heartily recommend it.
