Lumps under Boxers neck, help!

monkeybumsmum · 03/09/2010 21:22

DH just found 6 lumps on our beloved boxers neck - 3 each side. The highest ones are where our glands would be, with two more below in a line each side. They are quite big (small plum size). I cannot believe we have only just seen them Sad

Obviously we have jumped to the conclusion that it is some type of cancer, but has anyone had anything like this happen before? We'll be taking her to the vet tomorrow, but I feel terribly panicked.

I hope its benign, whatever it is Sad

I've had three boxers. My first had lumps. They were benign. Chances are these ones are too Smile I hope tomorrow goes well.

Thanks joni.

We've just been to the vets and he thinks it's cancer Sad Either Lymphoma or Lymphosarcoma. DH is taking her to see a cancer specialist on Monday.

Would appreciate any experiences dealing with these types of cancers if anyone's been where we are now Sad Thanks.

how old is he/she.

i have got my fingers crossed for you. there is every chance it can be treated. are you insured

beautifulgirls · 04/09/2010 15:33

Sorry to hear the news - some of these are responsive to treatment but really you need to get a firm diagnosis of exactly the type involved here and then the specialist will be able to give you a better idea on the longer term outlook with or without treatment, and the pros and cons of treating/not treating further too. Then it comes down to making the best decisions you can for your dog once you have the information available. Hope things turn out ok for you all.

Pud - she is 8. We live in Belgium and they don't do really do pet insurance here, but dh and I agreed last night that we don't care how much it costs. We will do whatever she needs us to do.

Beautifulgirls - thanks. I know we need to wait, at least it's only until Monday. I spoke to the specialist earlier and he said he should be able to go on Monday so we'll know more then. I read on the net this afternoon that untreated, the prognosis is not good at all. They said between 4-6 weeks but I can't believe she would go downhill that quickly? She seems her normal self, and her appetite hasn't changed. I can only hope we've caught it early enough to give her a fighting chance.

Thanks for your messages x

My last dog had lymphoma. He was only 6 .We noticed a lump on his neck and took him to the vet. He was diagnosed with it.
I think the options for him was chemo or a special diet.
Unfortunately we wasn't insured so went for the special diet but I read that chemo would only prolong his life by 6 months to a year.
Unfortunately within 3 weeks he went blind and downhill very fast.
We stopped the diet and decided to give him nice things to eat. We made the decision to put him to sleep and the vet gave him steroids which made him act more like himself for a few days which was sad.He was put to sleep about a month after diagnosis.
I hope the prognosis is much better with your dog and the meeting with the specialist goes well.

Thanks joni.

Shanks, I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. What a shock that must have been for him to go downhill so fast. I just can't imagine that happening with our dog, but by the sounds of it, it could Sad Knowing how fast this disease progresses is making dh and I incredibly nervous even having to wait until tomorrow to get some answers. Every time our dog (Kaya) lies down or looks tired I'm thinking that's it's getting worse already.

I did read that it can be a genetic thing - I know boxers are predisposed to getting tumours/cancers, but am also worried about our second boxer Macy, who is Kaya's niece. She only four though, and I think it affects slightly older dogs doesn't it?
