Taking a dog on a bicycle?

I have a bike and I have a small dog who loves sticking his face out of a car window. Is there anyway I could transport him safely on a bike? I was thinking large basket on the front with a cushion in, and practising in the park first to check he doesn't panic and that it feels secure. There are some lovely walks nearby which are a bit too far to walk to and where there isn't any parking. Does anyone transport their dog on a bike?

I did once have a child seat on the back of my bike and used to pedal everywhere with ds3 aged about 14 months in.

was no fun.

he used to wave at lorry drivers on the A17 and then Id get all snotty when they beeped at me.

Im pedalling as fast as I can AngrySmile.

plus if ds leaned to the left I went all skew whiffy.

v Envy of you though my dog wouldnt fit in a basket on my bike and look all 'cute'.....if he gets any bigger,Ill ride him (in a non weirdy way Blush and blow pedal power Smile.

I don't but there's a woman who lives close to me who is always riding about with her dog. Sometimes the dog runs alongside, but usually see it in the basket, which she has mounted on the rear pannier rack. It's a metal basket and fully enclosed and seems absolutely fine.

I'd put a harness on and clip the dog in if using a regular basket so that it can't jump out and run off but also won't throttle itself if it jumps/fall out.

You can get bike trailers for dogs too.

My ddog comes on my motorbike with me He has a special bag that you wear like a rucksack it has mesh windows to see out of but it's enclosed so he can't jump out, it even has a harness attachment inside.
I bought it of amazon for £30 it's made by a company called trixie.
A dog rucksack carrier seems like a safer option if your afraid of the dog jumping out of a basket, if you look on Google you might find some bicycle specific carriers.
Good luck with it my ddog loves going in his bag and coming out on my motorbike with me.

I have one for my dog, it's an enclosed basket with white mesh on top so she can't jump out, and it fixes onto the back of my bike. I haven't used it since we got ddog2 as I'm not sure they'd both fit in there.
I got a lot of comments while riding around with her in the backGrin
I first practised with getting her to just sit in it while it wasn't on the bike, and then with her in it but me just walking the bike, then finally riding.

Yes definitely some sort of harness. My old dog once jumped out of a trailer as we were being towed along on a shoot. He heard a pheasant beside us and being young and daft he leapt over the side of the trailer. His lead was wrapped around my hand which was wedged under the trailer edge and my dog was hanging by his neck. How he didn't kill himself I don't know. It was probably only seconds but I managed to wrench my hand out and he fell to the ground. Frightened me to death.

I have a Trixie dog trailer, which he loves. you can fully close it but leave mesh so he can see out. I also have a dog lead for the bike. it comes out like an upside down L shape from under the seat.
