Hi, would really appreciate advice re what's happening to my poor 10 month old Springer.

It's a follow up to this thread I posted the other day.

He has been hospitalised and I have managed to get away on our family holiday. Am in contact everyday with vet and have learned today that my springers 'thumb' has fallen off and his 'centre pad' has gone too. Cannot now speak to vet until tuesday but they have left a message saying they are hoping to get him walking asap to 'improve the circulation in his foot'.

It's all a bit distressing for me as this is a secondary problem.

Can anybody tell me what the future ramifications of having these problems may be please? I know this may sound silly to people who know but is it possible for a 'pad' to grow back? etc.

Really really grateful for some feedback on this if possible.

Thanks again in anticipation.

I don't know much, just wanted to offer sympathy.

From reading the other thread I can only gather that this is due to loss of circulation from the splint or dressing or something.

I don't think pads can grow back, no.

Poor you and poor puppy, I don't really know what else to add, sorrySad.

fabsoopergroovy · 27/08/2010 20:24

WTWTW - thanks for that - feeling really sad Sad for both our dog and my family Sad.

Pets - we love them don't we!

Is there any more news?

You and your puppy have been in my thoughts, I hope things are ok.

fabsoopergroovy · 31/08/2010 17:07

Hi - no more news. Have tried to contact the vet but have had, as yet, no response. We have just been talking about it and feel they are a little conspicuous by their absence as they have been incredibly communicative until recently.

TBH I am worried about him as loss of circulation would indicate more than the vet has disclosed but I'm really hoping it's all in my head.

We are trying to have a good holiday but I find myself constantly checking my emails (mobile signal very poor) for news.

And whats more there are gorgeous bouncy springers everywhere. SadSad.

Thanks for your concern and will update as soon as.

No advice on the problem but just wanted to post to wish your dog a speedy recovery.
I have a young springer and I know how lovely they are. I hope your springer is back home with you soon x

Update - have heard today that he only has two toes left Sad.

But, on the bright side, it doesn't seem that he will lose any more Smile.

It appears that his circulation is improving but we're not going to be able to have him home for at least another week Sad.

When the vet removes the bolt from his leg he is going to 'graft' pad onto his centre pad.

The irony of all this is that his achilles injury couldn't be healing any better!

Ho hum - been through periods of 'resignation', periods of 'blame' and periods of 'it could have been much worse' today. May feel the need to 'vent' at some stage on another thread but hopefully all will end well.

Just want him home really - not seeing him is just prolonging our agony.

Poor wee thing - and poor you too. Hopefully he will make a good recovery, and will soon be back to normal. I expect the fact that he is young and healthy will help him adapt quickly to what's happened, and any changes to his walking.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 02/09/2010 12:18

Oh I really hope that will be the end of it, you must be missing him so much.

Dogs adapt really well to losing a whole limb so I imagine he will do admirably.

Horrible for you though

fabsoopergroovy · 02/09/2010 21:34

Yes. Vet did try to reassure us that he has seen greyhounds run around a track with two toes so we're looking on the bright side.

Thanks for your concern.

Home tomorrow so may learn more over the weekend.

It is amazing what animals can adapt to - one of our previous pair of cats went blind, due to kidney problems, but lived on happily for several more months, once the kidney problems were under control. She could find her way round the house and garden, knew where her food was, didn't lose her house-training, and seemed to know when I was sitting on the couch in the front room, and would jump up and sit next to me for a cuddle and some fuss.

WitchyWooWoo · 03/09/2010 11:40

nothing really to add, but i wish your lovely doggie a speedy recovery. and bedlam is right, you cant keep a springer down :)

fabsoopergroovy · 06/09/2010 17:11

Going to fetch him later - am all excited.

Apparently nowhere near over it all yet but at least we can get him home.

Yippee - feel like a little girl again - something good after a shitty old day Smile.

Oooh I am excited for youSmile.

Please post later and let us know how he is, I ahve been thinking about you and your doggy rather a lot.

fabsoopergroovy · 06/09/2010 20:31

As mad as ever!! Grin

Has had his screw removed today but no pad graft. Have been told his two remaining toes are pink which is good but it's going to be a long and time consuming process.

He has a cone around his head and is bish bashing off every wall which is really funny to listen to and watch. He doesn't seem to mind one jot!!

His leg is dressed in pink and he is not putting his foot down but we all love him Smile.

Next vet visit - thursday.

That all sounds really good, you must all be delighted to have him back with you and him to be home again.

Best wishes for a very speedy recovery for him and keep us updated.
