I know there are a few of us that have recently picked up new pups.
Were your puppies lovely and calm when you first got them or were they mental straight away?

I can't believe how calm Teddy is being so far. He has slept a lot but even when he is awake, he just nibbles gently on your fingers or rolls his ball with his feet.

He has not had any accidents in the house yet which is a miracle.

I am wondering if this is the calm before the storm?

We were told 7 days before going outside. If you are not sure, perhaps you should phone your vet to check.

We also have a problem with Rory picking up and eating everything. In fact he vomited on Friday night and had bad diarrhoea.... we are not sure if it was due to the red berries that we then discovered, or the beads from the gasman's "bracelet"! Blush

assumpta · 21/09/2010 17:37

Purplefrog -we also had a vomit. You just can't watch them all the time, especially when they are a foot deep into the bushes!

Belle is 11 weeks today. I feel much better than this time last week, and hope that it continues along this vein. She is now sitting at the closed back door to go out for a wee/poo. I don't know if this will continue, but I hope so. Have you taught your to bark when they need to go out, or do you just follow them? Some people have told me that you can teach them to bark for this.

pinkanimal · 21/09/2010 19:02

assumpta Storm barks or howls when he needs to go outside especially when he needs to poo. I never taught him he just does it! Grin Storm had his last injection last wednesday and I took him out today for his first proper walk. He was quite good. Also we found that the lying on the back and chewing the lead stops as soon as you are outside of the garden as it is more interesting than chewing the lead. Take a few treats in case you need to coax her along.

thanks for linking me too Smile

watshestory I feel a bit like that myself tonight lol, got my puppy sat and he has been really good to be honest but today he has started chewing and crying and being a bit rough with my daughter (only playing obviously) and im a bit Hmm

kid · 21/09/2010 20:45

When Teddy had his 2nd injection, the breeder who he was still living with took him out straight away, on their way home from the vets infact!
I think it depends on which type of vaccination they use and the area and risk at that time.

I love Teddy so much Smile
I have always liked him but its now got to the point that I absolutely love him. Even when he woke me up at 4:40am this morning, I couldn't resist giving him a cuddle. I have a lovely photo of him that I took today, will attempt to add it to my profile.

At puppy class, someone commented that their puppy had gone a bit loopy and was being viscious. She advised them to just hold the dogs collar (or attach a piece of ribbon to the collar) and just hold dog back from whatever its getting over excited about.
If you do use some ribbon, make sure you take it off if you are not with the dog. Guess there is a risk of it strangling or hurting itself.

oh Im so glad Ive found this I can see itds going to be a godsend over the next few weeks, had mine since sat and all has gone very well but today I have felt overhwelmed for the first time, toileting, feeding him, then putting him in crate while feeding cats then making sure cats are safe and getting him out the crate, then trying to wear him out so he sleeps in crate while I go out .......

kid · 21/09/2010 21:46

Hello and welcome littlemisslost
I've had my puppy for 4 1/2 weeks now and it feels like he has always been here!
Especially when he is chewing our shoes up, biting out ankles, snapping at our ears and chin, waking me up at 6am or earlier!

But, he is totally worth it and has slotted into our family so well. We can't imagine not having him, he totally belongs with us and you will feel just the same about your new puppy in a few weeks.

What age and breed do you have?

Kid - did or does yours eat stuff in the garden. And if so what did you do. Mine is eating, leaves, stones, bark out of flower beds, tries snails, and god knows what when she is in the bushes. I even found an old bone that a fox must have pulled in!, and she was gnawing on it!

pinkanimal · 22/09/2010 16:31

mine eats all sorts and I go in and dig it out! Confused yesterday he almost choked on a helicopter thingy. and a stick!

kid · 22/09/2010 17:46

Teddy eats anything and everything in the garden. I only let him out there if I stay with him.
I have to fish all sorts out of his mouth and he doesn't give things up easily!

my pup is 10 weeks old this friday and is a Lakeland Terrier, he is gorgeous and soo good at night, sleeps in a crate quite happily but not left him for very long yet in the day which is going to happen from ext week, most will be about 6 hours but thinking of getting dog walker to take him out on those days?

lou33 · 22/09/2010 18:33

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 22/09/2010 18:35

Hi littlemisslost and welcome to the thread Smile.

Sorry to start off like this, but six hours is far far too long to leave a puppy even with someone coming in.

Tbh six hours is too long to leave an adult dog except on very rare occasions.

You need to have a re-think I'm afraid.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 22/09/2010 18:36

lou33 awww, that is too cute for wordsGrin.

lou33 · 22/09/2010 18:41

he is really sweet, settled in extremely well :)

Hi all ,

Haven't been onfor a while

our black lab - Mally - is now 14 weeks old and actually not badly behaved - I dont think we are quite there yet with the extreme chewing stage !

One question howvere if anyone is about -

since Tuesday evening her bowel movements have been very soft infact , like diahorrea , not as watery but soft plop !but it happens at the usually time when she opens bowel so it is not constant IYKWIM .

I am going to take her to vet this morning , hopefully with a sample Shock , she is upto date with jabs and worming etc - is it something she has eaten in garden perhaps ? We are usually very good and I find that some days my hand is constantly in her mouth getting things out !

littlemisslost · 23/09/2010 10:20

Wherethewildthingswere
6 hours will be the most and not very often (once in next 2 weeks)!
Me and dh work shifts and usually opposite to cover childcare 'and now doggy care lol' but there will be some days when we cannot help it and therefore I am using a dog sitter/walker to break the time up Confused we were told that 3-4 hours was okay ??
He seems fine, left him for 2.5 hours yesterday and he was fine, neighbour said he cried for about 5 minutes literally and then was okay

this should get you to my little BILLY Smile

littlemisslost · 23/09/2010 10:32

okay so that didnt work, I have put it on my profile Smile

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/09/2010 10:39

littlemisslost

Yes, but that is three to four hours maximum in any 24 hour period, not three hours then a break then another three hours.

If you leave him for just a few hours and then get someone to come any sit with him the whole of the rest of the time, then that is obviously fine.

Your puppy though, there is no way I would do it.
