I know there are a few of us that have recently picked up new pups.
Were your puppies lovely and calm when you first got them or were they mental straight away?

I can't believe how calm Teddy is being so far. He has slept a lot but even when he is awake, he just nibbles gently on your fingers or rolls his ball with his feet.

He has not had any accidents in the house yet which is a miracle.

I am wondering if this is the calm before the storm?

Mat is now in machine and will be firmly rolled till further notice! I wonder should I put down a piece of paper inside for her if she doesn't go, or a baby's care mat. Or would this be a silly thing to do as she mainly went outside today. I have read that some people do similar to this.

kid · 06/09/2010 22:29

lol, I just read your most recent message assumpta and was trying to think what machine you had put your dog named Mat in to!
I read back a few posts and now understand that its an actual mat that is in the machine and not your puppy Grin

Oh dear, that made me laugh! No belle here like lady muck snuggled on a bean bag. Just hoping it stops pouring before her last outing? I will give it half an hour till I check the weather conditions! She didn't want to go in the rain, hence the mat!

kid · 06/09/2010 22:36

I let Teddy out a little while ago and its pouring here. The snails are out in force and I really didn't want to have to go out and throw them all over the wall. Luckily Teddy wasn't interested in them at all, plus he most recent worming protects against lungworm, but I still wouldn't want to take the risk and let him eat snails.

I almost hate snails as much as I hate worms which also come out in the rain. I literally have to dodge them walking down the street. I have some weird phobias lol

booyhoo · 06/09/2010 22:53

assumpta, lots of people do put paper down, but i think if you are waning to encourage outside weeing then it might confuse her to start giving her a place to go inside.

booyhoo · 06/09/2010 22:54

kid, what about teddy's mum? any better?
sorry if i have missed this i haven't caught up on whole thread.

kid · 06/09/2010 23:25

I heard from the breeder today actually. His mum is allowed home tomorrow, she doesn't have cancer (thank God), she will be on antibiotics for 6 weeks and then she might be given steroids.
They will find out for definite when they collect her tomorrow.
Her liver is a bit knackered but at least its not cancer.

I was telling Teddy that his mummy is going to be okay Grin He looked like he was listening to me but was probably thinking to himself 'what a nutter!'
I am just so happy that she appears to be okay, I was really worried about her. I hope the test results tomorrow shed some light on the mystery.

booyhoo · 06/09/2010 23:51

oh that is fantastic, what a relief. hopefully some answers tomorrow and then jsut lots of r&r for her. that is such great nes, i am sure teddy knew what you were saying Grin

assumpta · 07/09/2010 07:31

KID - good to hear that she is hopefully on the mend.

Boohoo - well, I didn't put down the paper. She was unsettled about two hours after and then on and off during the night. I am shattered!

Came down to a yelping pup with a wet crate, which really isn't a problem, but I made the mistake of letting her walk around the floor, before I realized she had wee all over her paws. Of course this was now all over the floor. She wouldn't do a wee outside, but decided to do it on the floor 10minutes later just after I had it washed! I have no idea of the signs of her needing to go. Everyone says that they sniff the floor, but she does this anyway. OMG another one of the floor! What now?

pinkanimal · 07/09/2010 10:17

kid glad to hear Teddy's mummy is going to be ok. Smile I hate snails and slugs and worms, can't tread on them it's gross and avoid treading on snails coz I don't like the (CRUNCH) sound! Confused
Assumpta a wet crate is nothing, at least you aren't coming down to a poo covered crate and puppy! Shock Storm didn't like the wet weather last night either (who can blame them, they are only babies, I wouldn't want to wee in the rain either!) Hmm It's hard to guess when they need to wee, poo's are easier. Storm goes mental (more than usual!) scratching the door, I let him out and he goes and poo's. Smile He is quite good at going to the door when he wants to go out, the only problem is sometimes it isn't to poo or wee it's to play and eat grass Confused ! Storm has a puppy toilet mat and he uses it as well as going outside. Saves my carpets, he isn't confused either he knows he either goes outside or on his mat. Last night he didn't poo in his crate! Grin yay! He did however poo for Daddy on the carpet!!!! Hmm At least I didn't have to clean it up!!! Wink He goes to bed lovely now, no crying at all. He only barks in the morning to say "mummy I'm up and want my breakfast"

assumpta · 07/09/2010 10:36

That is brilliant. How old is he now? Did you just let him Yelp himself out at night over a period of time. Well done, you must be so pleased.

No, wet crate was no problem, the way I let her walk out of it was my silly fault. If I had seen that she was wet, I would have carried her. I think if the same happens tonight I will put some plastic down by the back door with newspaper on it and hope she goes there. The poor thing was drenched, and of course was afraid of the hairdryer so I towel dried her as much as I could. I have also put a small piece of newspaper outside on a tiny dry area with a wee soaked piece of kitchen roll. Do you think that is ok?, or confusing? It's only cause it is peeing down really heavy. I played with her for a while in the rain this morning just she could see that it isn't all bad. The thing is we go to Ireland a lot, so she has to get used to it! I don't have a problem paper training anyway, but don't know the right way about that either. At school today one mum said yes to paper, the other said no!

lou33 · 07/09/2010 10:57

Eddie is 11weeks today. He was weighed on fri and was 3.5kg, judging byhis belly thats just fine! Dora is 9 months now and she was 13.9kg. Vets v pleased with them both

pinkanimal · 07/09/2010 11:25

assumpta Storm is now 9 weeks and covering the crate with a blanket helped, as did putting my old dressing gown over the crate too. that way the crate smelt of me. The first few nights were the worst, and with a bit of ignorance perseverence he gradually cut down his barking till now he goes fine. Pooping in it is still a problem some nights but he is still young and doesn't have full control over himself yet. Storm weighs about a stone, not exact as I weighed hubby then got him to hold him and deducted his weight to get Storms.
the best thing is whatever works for you. Storm was already part paper trained before he left his breeder so thats why we cotinued. They say they get confused but I don't think he does. Do what you think works, the problem is everyone will think different and all the puppy books contradict each other too.
What is everyone else doing about the chewing??? Spray doesnt work and he doesnt listen to me. He also has hypo-puppy moments and I cant calm him down when hes like it. He charges around attacking everyone and biting. I know im not supposed to put him in his crate for bad behaviour but what do i do then???

booyhoo · 07/09/2010 14:33

well i came down to a poo covered crate and pup, and he has done two poos in the house today and it isn't even raining outside.!!! he seems to be regressing.

booyhoo · 07/09/2010 16:01

it is driving me mad, especially when he was doing so well and has had no accidents at my mums so i know he gets it!! it just isn't my day today, slept in again, and my fridge/freezer has broken so i have to dump a lot of food, can't afford new one so am trawling through gumtree and freecycle listings.

assumpta · 07/09/2010 16:18

Oh boohoo, I would be 'boohooing' if I was you. I am finding it like it was with the children. Except that they don't nip quite so early on!

kid · 07/09/2010 19:51

Yay! Teddy can now chase a ball on the house!
I am sure he only does it to annoy me because it's the most noisiest squeaky ball and everytime I throw it out of the room, he runs after and brings it back.
He doesn't bring it back to me yet, but it's a start Smile

I have been containing teddy in a certain area so he can't get upstairs. I popped put for 1/2 hour tonight to pick dh up from the station and when we got back, teddy was upstairs! Looks like he has worked out an escape route so I'll have to rethink my trap for him lol

another peaceful and poo free night!! yay so proud of my lil boy! Grin He has now learnt "paw"! Has anyone else started with the Hypo-puppy moments or is it confined to Huskies???

MirandaLuck · 08/09/2010 12:45

Hello!!!
How many people got their puppies from rescue or breeders? What are the pros and cons?

Avantia · 09/09/2010 06:55

Lost this thread for a while - have been totally knackered - getting up in night as Mally needs wee & poo ( will bark and cry to be let out !) , then early morning antics !

However last two nights she has slept through until 6am - only then because we got up and checked on her Blush - she has been out for a wee and now snoring again on her bed !

She is fully jabbed and out and about now so perhaps that is making a difference.

But we have come a long way since night 1 whenshe howled and howled and howled ...

Haven't caught up with rest of thread so hope everyone is doing OK . Smile

MirandaLuck - Got our puppy from a breeder - why because we knew the breeder on recommendation and had the type of dog we wanted - been talking with them for about a year as he knew he was going to breed his family/working dog .

Also wanted one from puppy as it was our first family dog . I think if I had more experience with dogs then I may have considered a rescue.
