Waking every 40 minutes!

For around 4 weeks, my baby has been waking through the night more and more. He's 3 months, turning 4 months in a few days. I started tracking his sleep and he's waking every 40 minutes! Me and my dh are exhausted. Dh bounces him back to sleep each wake up. I'm feeding him atm (breastfeeding) to see if that helps, but it doesn't usually. We had one night last week where he only woke up 2 times and it was bliss. But other than that it's felt like torture. 😢 Naps are hit and miss, we sometimes have to resettle him after a similar amount of time. When does it end/get better?? What do we do? 😢

Bumping again as my baby wont stay asleep 😢 we've been putting him down for the last hour over and over again, but he keeps waking up within a minuteeach time. I'm heartbroken he's not getting enough sleep 😟

We are having very similar issues with my baby who is the same age. I'm exhausted! A few things I've found have worked -

  1. If he cries when I put him down the first time, I can't just wait a few minutes and try again as he will still cry (and again, and again, and the 30th time ...). If he's in that mood I have to let him fall asleep in my arms, sit for at least 20 minutes until he is in a deep deep sleep then transfer him. It's pretty boring but it's much less frustrating than his eyes pinging open the second his bum touches the mattress.
  1. I'm also breastfeeding, but have just started doing a dream feed with a big bottle of formula before I go to bed. I wait til he's been asleep about half and hour and I can generally pick him up, give it to him and put him back without him waking up. And I'll usually get a good 3 hour stretch after that (much needed as it's every hour for the rest of the night!)

I hope your night last night was a bit better!

Sorry you're in the same boat, it's awful not getting enough sleep 😓 @AsanteSanaSquashBanana we've been up the last hour trying to get him to sleep. Every time he goes down he's awake within 5 minutes. Nap times have been horrendous too. My baby doesn't take a bottle, so I don't have the option to give a big feed before bed. I'm breastfeeding now and just hoping it helps give us all a good chunk of sleep after 😓 hope your night has been more restful.

@AsanteSanaSquashBanana how is your LO doing with his sleep?

@NovemberFlush even worse if that's possible! Night before last I had a grand total of 2 hours sleep. I've started to notice myself feeling angry at him too which I hate, so there's been a couple of times where I've had to go and sit in the living room in the middle of the night to try and calm down.

In desperation I tried the Pick Up Put Down method for his naps today (I know he's too young for sleep training really but I was losing the will to live!). It worked well for his 1st nap, although not his 2nd, so I might try to do this a bit more to see if it makes a difference.

How have things been at your end?

NovemberFlush · 05/08/2025 10:28

@AsanteSanaSquashBanana Oh no, that's so hard. I've been there, there's a reason they use sleep deprivation as torture! Sometimes you just need a breather. Do you have support?
That's good about the naps, how is it going?
For us it's been a better night here and there, but mostly still having the wakeups and needing settling. He's been moving around the crib quite a bit the last couple of nights, so he's definitely learning how to be more mobile while we're trying to sleep 😅😭
