New crime drame starts tonight (29 July) on BBC 4

Not sure if it is "noir" but last few Irish produced series I have seen have been good.

Also available on iPlayer https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0g00pvp

BBC Four - Clean Sweep, Series 1, Done Is Done

Shelly Mohan, a housewife and mother of three, is forced into a desperate act.

For some reason within half an hour of me creating this thread someone started another one. ???!!!???

So have asked MN HQ to add the "Binge Watch" to this one for anyone who is or has watched it all via iPlayer

I think I am about half way through now.

At first I thought hasn't there been something like this before, but soon got into it.

I think maybe the opening scenes were the weakest.

I really like the way Irish tv series really dont mind that nearly all of the lead characters are not very nice people!

And are able to include family life in a natural way.

Interesting show the links to what is happeneing in the UK.

Not saying much about the plot line, as more concerned it will show how little I have understood what is going on, than because it might be a spoiler.

I've watched it all now, and despite big plot gaps thought it was far better than most 9pm drama slot fillers - maybe why it was shunted into BBC4.

Thought the husband was a real shit, or maybe just a bit dim, but liked the family dynamics, even though it was often sad.

But the basic premise of a supposedly everyday housewife and mother having a totally different past, that was about to be revealed, was shown well.

So even if Charlene McKenna as Shelly Mohan seemed a bit over the top at times, in fact given what was happening, not really surprising!

I watched the lot in one go when I was ill and having a sofa day.

I thought it was awful, unnecessary sex scenes and all the stuff about the daughter starting her periods ,what on earth was that all about?

I'm not even quite sure I understood the ending tbh after all that 😂

I must admit I have low expectation of the 9pm slot on the main channels.

And my main problem was the lead actress, but otherwise it did seem to bit better than some of the crime dramas.

But then last night found a proper film noir and realised most tv dramas are all a bit samey or just silly. (Apart from Happy Valley and Blue Light!)

What was it, I always need film recommendations?

IwantToRetire · 02/08/2023 20:12

The silly thing is after i watched it having recorded it I then deleted it. And just cant remember its name. But should add it wasn't that pleasant. Like one of those old Robert Mitchum, Humphrey Bogart films of moody, down at heel detective, but should add quite a lot of unpleasant sex.

Will see if I can find it.

Okay this is it https://tv24.co.uk/p/manhattan-night-474o7h due to be shown again in next few weeks. See link.

But please note, a lot is unpleasant in a much more overt way than old fashioned black and white smokey moody jazz 50s film.

Funnily enough the lead actor who I dont really like was also in a very good film about war correspondents. Terrifying.

The other film, very, very grim is Harrison's Flowers. Might be on iPlayer or All4 (I dont subscribe to any movie streaming services)

I watched all of Clean Sweep the last two days. I thought it was good!

I think all the family stuff was to show the contrast between her being capable of murder but being a sensitive, caring, fun mum and step mum.

And to show that some challenges in life you can get over and others you can't.

Yes, although part of me wanted to know how did she go from killer (first time shown in flash backs) to suburban wife and mother and married to a police man!
