I have Given Up Corrie after 25 years

Recently I've stopped watching Coronation Street, which I've watched regularly since the age of 8.

I've just become bored with the either boringly predictable or stupidly over dramatic plotlines and there are more characters that I hate than I like.

With the shootings and the World Cup, I missed loads of episodes, couldn't be bothered to catch up, and now I have at least half an hour freer on most evenings!

Te only other soap I occasionally watch is Neighbours before I do the school run.

Not sure why I'm posting really, but I feel oddly proud of myself

What a shame you have missed a few cracking one liners eg
Jason to David - how would you feel if your girlfriend dumped you for a complete fool?
David - are you being serious?
Jason - yeah
David - well no I wouldn't like it.

Yes some storylines are hit and miss - anyone enjoying the Cheryl and Lloyd one? No me neither but the comedy is still first rate.

I gave up EE a couple of years ago and love my extra hours per week it really makes a difference, couldn't give up Corrie though.

I gave up EE 10 years ago when I had DS1, and I so don't miss it.

However I could never give up corrie

well that is quite funny i have to admit.

I just wish it had some normal characters -far too many larger than life ones at the mo.

I have threatened to give it up a few times (most recently when Sunita and Dev got back together in a most unrealistic manner) but it always sucks me back in, I love most of the older characters, and quite often characters/storylines that I don't like turn themselves round. For example thought Steve and Becky were awful together at first, now I think they're great. Windasses were dreadful, now they are great characters. On the other hand, I still haven't forgiven Sunita and would like to see the entire Platt clan go under the tram. Ditto the Websters and Molly. I too have been watching since I was about 8, can't see me stopping TBH.

Just turn your brain off and watch it whilst you are doing the ironing, it works for me

I stopped watching soaps a few years ago. Reclaimed my life What really grated me in the end was the over-dramatic & outlandish plotlines, they have ruined soaps.

Years ago they would tease the viewer with the prospect of an affair, the slow build-up to it was the best bit. Now the ink is barely dry on the marriage cert before one of the characters is off shagging someone else.

Too many murders, kidnappings, explosions now. Nah. Bring back Ena Sharples, she'd sort them out!!

letsblowthistacostand · 10/07/2010 20:08

Would this make you keep watching?

MarthaQuest · 11/07/2010 21:13

God Yes !

Its strange to think we have been watching corrie since we were eight!!! thats thirty odd years. I wouldnt dream of letting an eight year old watch Eastenders, although I know plenty that do.

Rockbird · 12/07/2010 03:54

Given it up here too. Have watched it for about 30 of my 38 years and have just lost interest since about Christmas. Watch it about once a month at most so decided to just cut the cord!

Did the same over the years with Emmerdale, Neighbours and H&A. Just left with Eastenders but I like that too much to give up.

BooToYouToo · 12/07/2010 11:18

Why do they have to be on so often? When Enders was only twice a week I could keep up but gave up a few years ago when I realised I was rushing kids bedtimes so as not to miss it! Also storylines drag on so long. Stuck with EE to see Bradley find out about Stacey and Max but that took nearly a year! Think they should have one couple who are happy, wanted it to be Billy and Little Mo so when they broke up it was the death knell for me.

Oh, I couldn't give up Corrie. Particularly enjoyed the reading of Blanche's will recently; even though the solicitor was reading it I could still hear her ascerbic tones in my head

Agree some of the stories are lame though - anything to do with Lloyd or Michelle for a start.

MarthaQuest · 12/07/2010 11:35

It noticeably went downhill when they increased the number of episodes per week.

Too many episodes is definitely a problem, I would never keep up without Sky+. I used to watch all of them when they were only on twice a week, (pre-DCs!) but once they all upped the amount of episodes I gradually dropped them all except Corrie. It has also meant they have to have a much larger cast and lots of extra storylines so diluting the good stuff.
