I love Rev! it is fab

tablefor3 · 07/07/2010 12:03

Again - I say that it does ring true. The part where Adam was just sitting in church praying about making more time for his wife (and the church numbers) was actually very moving and a far more realistic portrayal of how Christians pray day-to-day than is ever seen normally.

GroovyGretel · 07/07/2010 12:12

Oh that's a shame scrappy. I love Rev - I think that it's a really lovely, truthful portrayal of people rather than stereotypes.

I really don't think it's about having a pop at Christians, rather it's observations about the real world we live in - and yes, I hope that they do have a conversation about homosexuality, I think that they could have a really interesting take on it.

And I went (accidentally, once) to a church full of charismatics in West London.

Laughed my ass off and then went elsewhere.

GroovyGretel · 07/07/2010 12:13

Oh and you got it in one MaryBS!

FoJo · 07/07/2010 13:45

thanks everyone, me and dh will watch when dd has gone to bed

scrappydappydoo · 07/07/2010 14:41

See, I knew I was going against the grain! . Ok I will concede that I do agree about the praying bit, not having time to do everything, the feeling you aren't 'doing enough', the constant worry about giving/money, the affect your ministry has on (ahem) home life - yes that definitely did ring true. I suppose its the archdeacon and their take on charismatics that wound me up.. No archdeacon I know would be so negative, unsupportive and results driven and no charismatics I know would be so insensitive to just take over in that manner and not build up relationship - and no he didn't remind of nicky gumbel at all. (see told you I had a sense of humour failure )

(and the following is just to justify myself )
I have actually have worked in the church with people at different levels, from different backgrounds and in different situations and it just doesn't ring true with my experience - maybe it does to other people but hey [shrugging emoticon] its just my opinion..

madhairday · 07/07/2010 14:47

I'm loving this.....and I'm married to a (nearly) vicar and have charismatic leanings....thought Mrs Vicars withering look when asked about the flowers and being patronised at about 'not just being a vicar's wife' was priceless.
Yes the archdeacon and the charismatics were portrayed in less than glowing lights but I put my hands up and say there's truth in there...

(but we're not all like that...)

MumInBeds · 07/07/2010 14:52

I grew up high anglican, went charismatic in my teens then married a catholic and we both now go to a church very much like the one in Rev.

There is a lot in Rev that is (magnified for poetic licence but) very familiar so it makes me laugh. Dh likes it too and has a massive crush on Olivia Coleman so it's all win.

queenceleste · 07/07/2010 15:11

I heard Tom Hollander interviewed and he said they went to see loads of CofE vicars and the writers were just lifting stuff from life. Obviously some things are cliches because there's some truth in them.

What's definitely got truth in it is the satanic evo minister - he is, I'm afraid to say, straight from life, I've met those guys, they totally confuse themselves with Jesus and have all sorts of weird sexual repressions going on imho.

And the programme illustrates in broad brush strokes the nightmare of the modern CofE. Fantastic buildings and dwindling congregations except where there's a fab school!

I bet a good proportion of those parents stop going once Johnny and Camilla have got a secure place....

anonymousbird
respect to you for being friends with the Ineffable Colman. She is one of my most favourite actresses (I sound like Lola now...) and I could happily watch her in everything. She should be in everything which she wants to be in.

anonymousbird · 07/07/2010 18:33

QC she is just one of the nicest people ever, and just so, well, "normal" (in the nicest possible way) and kind. When we last saw her she was telling us about Rev and was so modest about it, and here she is being an utter utter star.

We've shared many laughs and tears together, often all at the same time.. she deserves success and recognition, she works so hard and is just bloody lovely!

MaryBS · 07/07/2010 18:38

I think she's great too - I loved the "flower" scene between her and Darren on Monday night! I thought she was brilliant in Hot Fuzz too, with Simon Pegg!

jooseyfruit · 08/07/2010 08:58

don't forget her brilliant work in Peep Show!

CompyCod · 08/07/2010 09:00

i saw epsiode one and thought was crap

southeastastra · 08/07/2010 09:02

she really winds me up for some reason.

CompyCod · 08/07/2010 09:02

is it supposed to be ha hahaha hailarious?

anonymousbird · 08/07/2010 17:44

And the infamous "Bev/Kev" adverts..... remember those???

FoJo · 08/07/2010 21:20

am 10 minutes into episode 2 and its very promising! Just seen the bit where the wife lists her fantasies, very funny and no not suitable for my 12 year old!! Where have i seen the tall good looking trendy vicar who is bringing his congregation along next week?

anonymousbird · 08/07/2010 22:08

Finally found the Bev/kev clip. Was being a bit thick on Google. "some of her earlier work"!!!

bev/kev aa advert

oftenpurple · 09/07/2010 06:47

Thanks for pointing this one out - just seen both episodes on Iplayer. Thought the 'nice top, is it Boden?' line was written especially for MNetters LOL

MaryBS · 09/07/2010 07:09

Fojo, his name is Darren Boyd, here's what he's been in:

www.imdb.com/name/nm0101740/filmogenre

But things like Kiss me Kate and Smack the Pony.

DandyDan · 11/07/2010 21:18

It is not full of cliches and is very observant of many true things about the church and its running and the lives of vicars and their families and parishioners. I was at a meal with 15 other clergy last week and they all thought it was brilliant and although exaggerated for comic effect, very good and sensitive to the issues and the delights and foibles of the C of E.
