Is that right? And what was that thing she was trying to feed the baby with? Why that over a bottle? (Genuine question - never seen one before).

She's on anti-psychotic meds I think?

And it was a cup feeder, easier for a bf baby to use than a bottle.

MathsMadMummy · 25/06/2010 20:49

elaborate? what meds? (don't watch EE)

MathsMadMummy · 25/06/2010 20:50

oh we had a little cup thing for DD to use with expressed milk

do you think they handled the issue well then?

5inthebackofthenet · 25/06/2010 20:51

She is Bipolar, so would be whatever they giv for that. Lithium?

orienteerer · 25/06/2010 20:52

Who's Stacey?
So what?

foureleven · 25/06/2010 20:52

Shes on meds for Bi-polar, ive no idea if you can breast feed on them but I have been deliberating over how I feel about the storyline since it was on..

On one hand I dont think its right that they were making out like the nurse was a PITA for encouraging her... on the other hand they were also making out like it was terrible of stacey not to want ot breast feed... im confused.

But I was wondering the whole time, what wil MN think about this?!

I breast fed for 3 mths and hated it.. just for the background.

foureleven · 25/06/2010 20:53

Umm I dont think they give lithium for bi-polar!
This needs to be on mental health, AIBU, Chat, breatsfeeding arghhhhhh ....

thisisyesterday · 25/06/2010 20:58

they do give Lithium for bi-polar yes

thisisyesterday · 25/06/2010 20:58

i don't watch EE so don't know the baclground/story

but why would she cup-feed if she can't breastfeed at all anyway?

MathsMadMummy · 25/06/2010 20:59

what days was this on please? (will watch it)

Tortoise · 25/06/2010 21:05

The nurse said more of the meds she was on would have gone through the placenta than would be present in breast milk.
Was on tonight MathsMad.

sheeplikessleep · 25/06/2010 21:06

mathsmad - tonights episode.
i thought the bit at the end (where stacey said "i'm so sorry i can't give you what you need") was really apt and had me in tears . personally i think that aspect / line was handled well.

i just thought the midwife/doctor/paedetrician woman (whatever she was!) was annoying. she asked 'did she get any colustrum?' ... what an odd question! as if you know. why didn't she ask whether latch felt right, whether it was comfortable / how it felt etc etc.
rant over

foureleven · 25/06/2010 21:07

do they thisisyesterday...? I didnt know that. Only that one of my best friends has Bi Polar and she has only ever been given things with very strange long medical names.

It was on tonight but repeated on sunday afternoon and is on bbciplayer anytime.

I dont get why they give baby a cup if she's not going to breastfeed. Maybe in case stacey changes her mind..?

But despite the benefits of breastfeeding, surely a mother who has taken her medication would be better...? I mean if she doesnt take her medication so that her milk is ok she could flip..!

fifitot · 25/06/2010 21:08

WHy though do they make such a fuss about it? It's breastfeeding awareness week - would be nice to see it handled as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Baby latches on, noone makes a big deal of it.

I HATE the ways soaps represent breastfeeding.

sheeplikessleep · 25/06/2010 21:11

i thought the woman was quite pushy to be honest. are they really like that if you bottle feed? good old stacey put her in her place though.

thisisyesterday · 25/06/2010 21:13

well if her meds are contra-indicated then she can't just latch the baby on and feed away can she?

foureleven · 25/06/2010 21:14

I dont know what theyre like, I got the hell out of there as fast as I could!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 25/06/2010 21:17

Well, they are not nicknamed the Breastapo for nothing!! I might as well have said I was going to plunge my child in boiling water after giving it a good shake when I announced I would be bottle feeding!!!!

MathsMadMummy · 25/06/2010 21:18

dont suppose anyone remembers how they handled it with tina and baby max on hollyoaks? i missed it

agree it'd be nice if it was just got on with

sheeplikessleep · 25/06/2010 21:19

i thought was also quite funny how she so obviously had a pillow up her top.

oh and how she has a room of her own, rather than in a ward.

oh and how her contractions started REALLY painfully.

and how there aren't any of those annoying 'buzzer' things going in the background (or was that just the hospital i was at?)

ruddynorah · 25/06/2010 21:20

she was using a haberman feeder to avoid nipple confusion i think.

the nurse said she would be fine to bf on the meds as the baby would be getting less through milk than she did through the placenta.

stacey's anger at the nurse i think was more because she feels overwhelmed by the whole thing, missing bradley, guilt that ryan's the dad etc.

she was saying sorry to the baby that she couldn't give her what she needs as she looked at her meds..meaning that her breastmilk was tainted by the meds and also as her mother she is 'tainted' by bi-polar. she also probably worries her daughter will have bi polar too, as stacey's mum does too.

could analyse it til kingdom come. but i'm watching the disabled thing on bbc2 just now

thisisyesterday · 25/06/2010 21:21

when i was in hospital with ds1 they seemed very concerned with ensuring I gave him a bloody bottle
sadly, i wanted to breastfeed and iddn't get any bloody support

comparing people who want to help mums breastfeed to Nazi's is ignorant, offensive and guaranteed to ensure people ignore pretty much everything else you say.
please don't do it

foureleven · 25/06/2010 21:21

I always think that in films and on TV sheep I had about 24 hours of crappy non-contractions which got worse and worse until I was like '...oh I suppose I should go in to the ward now'

thisisyesterday · 25/06/2010 21:26

i was offered a private room when i had ds1 (i if i'd paid) and with ds3 my contractions were hideously painful straight away!

i do however think i am prob the exception rather than the rule witht hat

sheeplikessleep · 25/06/2010 21:31

i guess thisis that is what i was questioning really, whether stacey would afford to pay.

yeah, i guess contractions can start very painfully straight away, but like you say, i think this is more unusual than usual (purely based on hearsay than any qualifications there for me to make that statement). i remember heather's waters broke as she got her first very painful contraction and she screamed out in pain. i just think it's overdramatised at every point.
