Katy - how much would a private MRI scan cost? I'm wondering if we can rally the generous people of Mumsnet to help get this sorted for you once and for all

Katymac · 21/06/2010 14:56

Oh her grandparent will pay for a scan - but we need a GP referral letter & the GP won't give her one

OP posts:
lazarusb · 21/06/2010 17:51

Change your GP, we are all behind you here, however much that helps x

IMoveTheStars · 21/06/2010 19:51

oh Katy,
this must be so awful for you, have been following your threads from the start and your poor DD.

Have you tried speaking to your PCT? Is there anythink that I/We can do that will help?

(agree with the suggestion for changing GPs by the way, yours has been monumentally unsupportive)

G0ingPostal · 21/06/2010 19:59

katymac - have read your threads but not posted before. Really and for you and your dd at the way you are being treated. If you can't find a new NHS GP, you can go to a private GP who would refer you ... expensive consultation fees but worth it if it gets your dd a scan? Your GP sounds like an arse by the way, but I'm sure I don't need to tell you that.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 21/06/2010 20:04

It's shocking I was talking to a friend's mother a couple of weeks back who had been in really bad pain for a year from a knee injury. Her GP kept saying it would get better by itself and refused to refer her for an MRI. She went to visit her DD in the US and the daughter took one look at her and took her to her own family doctor, who took one look at her and sent her for an MRI, which revealed I forget what, exactly, but something that was definitely not going to fix itself but only needed a small operation. They had to pay, of course, but that wasn't so much the issue (although NHS should have provided it free) as being "allowed" to have the scan, which should have been done as soon as a few weeks had gone past with no improvement.

If there's anything, practically speaking, that we can do to help please say. Are there any private GPs near you who could do you a private referral? Supposedly BUPA run private GP services in Norwich, but looking at their website I don't think they do referrals for chronic conditions. Near me (and presumably in other areas) we have groups like MediClinic who offer private GP services that do include referrals. We just need to find something like that nearer you.

MRIs are expensive, if you don't already have private cover it will be more than most people could afford

I am stunned and shocked that MRIs have not been performed

Have you considered going to the PCT? I know you have already received 2 consultant DXs but what department are they? Have you seen a consultant opthalmic-neurologist?

Katymac · 21/06/2010 21:24

Thanks everyone - I am a bit stunned by it all (still)

Just seen this, have you posted in another topic to continue the discussion? Saw your first thread on the situation ages back, didn't know until now what a time you've had. I'm so sorry. Hope we can find a way to help.

Katymac · 22/06/2010 16:56

this is pretty much where we are at (at least I think so)

Thanks

I had an MRI once and it was £800, that was 2 years ago.

KatyMac · 23/06/2010 13:15

Thanks StripeyKnickers - I know it will be expensive but I just need to be sure

KatyMac · 24/06/2010 22:26
