Great!? What's so great about watching exploitative patronising rubbish like this?

kittya · 14/05/2010 23:45

I say that every single week that it is patronising rubbish but last nights at least showed how some people genuinely do live beyond the poverty line, at least it highlighted the very real housing problems that we have. It never does usually. And, to be fair, they didnt just chuck money at them like they normally do. I just hope that family have been rehoused as a result of the programme.

Why do we need to be 'shown' poverty in a tv programme? Don't we all know that some families are poor and that life is difficult and rotten for their children?
I hate the idea of a wealthy family adopting a poor family on television like this. Can the poor family have no pride?

Why is one family allowed to patronise and dictate to another because they have more money? What kind of message is that for your children to absorb?

It just feels sick and wrong and I think it truly horrible that it is on television

Shame on the company that made it.

Perhaps you didn't mean it Kittya but I thought your post sounded a bit "Ooh goody real poverty for a change". Maybe 200 years ago you could have gone to Bedlam and watched the lunatics - "Ooh goody. Real mad people in real distress for a change".

No, thats not what I meant. If you look at what Ive said about it before, you will know that its never sat comfortably with me and Ive always found it terribly patronising. Especially the one where the rich family sent the poor ones off to boarding school. So, Im sorry if I offended you. Believe me, I hate it. But, it did highlight housing problems. We have all commented from the day this programme started that it would be better to show a family that was genuinely struggling, not just because theyve mounted up debts. Also, I hated the fact that the "poorer" families where always single mothers so yes, I was pleased to see a father around this week, to show that actually families arent just poor because there is no bloke to provide. For me this series is like the secret millionaire, I dont like that either.
