Anyone else watching?

Really interesting view of 2 families.

The rich lot are vile!

People are better off being poor if that is what money does to you.

nancydrewrocks · 08/04/2010 21:18

Why are the rich family 'vile'?

Apart from the son coming across as slightly odd I haven't seen anything vile at all.

Alambil · 08/04/2010 21:19

I am not liking the rich 13 year old ... the "poor" girl is lovely

Worzel, money doesn't do that to everyone. My family have multi-millionaire friends that are the most "average" / "normal" people you'd ever meet.

Milliways · 08/04/2010 21:19

The little girl is OK. Can't really blame the children, it's as their parents say- they've lived in a bubble.

LOVE Iris & her Mum though. Wonder if she's got a hope of ever getting a pupilage? Snobby lot in charge of most chambers. She may be better applying for a jobin a solicitors firm?

I get the "vile" vibe from the 13 yar old; panicing in economy whilst "walking through" from first class indeed... get a life, child! it isn't catching, being squashed ya know!

WorzselMummage · 08/04/2010 21:22

I just find them really unpleasent.

Do the rich not teach their children anything ?

Milliways · 08/04/2010 21:26

Gosh, she's skint & still volunteers every week.

DS has thought about law, and the Barrister who spoke at his school frightened them all with statistics about the unemployed, in debt, law students.....

I got as far as doing the CPE (degree conversion course). Then it dawned on me that unless I went to work for a big commercial firm that would pay all my fees and a big training salary, it was just financially impossible. So I didn't go any further. It's a tough career to get into without some financial backing. Respect to her for getting this far and hope she gets her pupillage - on her own merits, not just for the TV.

violethill · 08/04/2010 21:43

Disgraceful that it's generally dependent on the old boys' network and money, rather than sheer ability

hana · 08/04/2010 21:46

iris is simply gorgeous - personality plus

gaelicsheep · 08/04/2010 21:47

It makes such a refreshing change to see some reality for a change (I'm so sorry for her though). I get so sick of the endless "if you work hard enough you can achieve anything and get yourself off the breadline". It just isn't true for so many people.

Alambil · 08/04/2010 21:53

at least the rich bloke isn't patronising her in his advice / help.... it could have been a very different tone

Missus84 · 08/04/2010 21:55

Urgh - the whole premise of the programme is so patronising though!

Alambil · 08/04/2010 21:57

is it? is it any different to sponsorship to the third world? (amounts are obviously different and life-threatening circumstances; but the premis (sp) is the same, isn't it?)

gaelicsheep · 08/04/2010 21:59

I totally agree the programme itself is a bit yuck.

Milliways · 08/04/2010 22:07

Was pleased for Iris though. I hope her Mum gets her Pupilage soon though.

I thought that the saddest bit was when Iris (poor) got the letter from the rich girl saying that when she grew up she wanted to work on a farm or a zoo because she loved animals. And then Iris said maybe she could work for her as a receptionist or something when she grew up. Bless.

loungelizard · 08/04/2010 22:50

Iris was absolutely delightful.

Think the boy found it a bit disconcerting that she was so nice. I think he thought she was going to be different (i.e. less bright) because she was 'poor' so bit of an eye opener for him!! (and not a good advertisement for a private education....).

Yes, I found the comment Iris made about herself that she could be a receptionist or whatever whilst rich girl presumably owned the zoo deeply depressing. She was obviously as bright as the other two children, if not more so.

charlieandlola · 08/04/2010 23:06

I absolutely loved iris - such a delight and a credit jo her mum. Not do sure about georgie though .
Enjoyed the programme more than I thought I would.

mumblechum · 09/04/2010 11:39

I missed the end but I really liked everyone except for the 13 yr old boy, going on about Zara Philips going to his school "Yes, we all know" said his sister rather dismissively. The sister and the parents were just very normal, nice people and Iris and her mum were lovely.

I did think Iris's mum could have scrubbed up a bit for their first meeting, though.

violethill · 09/04/2010 16:10

Yes, the boy was up himself - scarily so for just 13! He left me feeling the parents weren't getting their money's worth there!

The sister and parents were much better, but I thought Iris was the real star - definitely the most attractive of all the children in every way - thoughtful, articulate and interesting.

brimfull · 09/04/2010 16:13

I thought all were nice people but the hopeful barrister needs a complete wardrobe and style overhaul.

Bomper · 09/04/2010 17:26

Had to laugh when the dad took them back to the road where he had grown up, and he said something like 'Have you noticed the way the houses are all so close together, they are called 'terraced' houses'. It was such an alien concept to them!! I was shouting 'Yes and I live in one!!!!' at the tv

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/04/2010 20:40

Iris was a sweetie&a real credit to her mum. Was nice that the single lady got a chance and had a job created for her.

The other 2 siblings were spolit but not their fault. They were not impressed where their dad grew up. And nothing wrong with terraced houses.

The dad obv worked hard and made something with himself and wanted to give something back to society
