Masterchef - 'children's doctor' rather than paediatrician

Was watching Masterchef last night and was a bit when the voiceover and onscreen intro described one contestant as a 'children's doctor'. John Torode then came along and said something along the lines of 'So you're a paediatrician, why do you want to get into cooking?'.

Why did the programme go for, what I feel is, a dumbed down version of this man's professional job title? DH reckons it could be that people here 'paed ...' and just hear '..ophile'. Or is the BBC just talking down to viewers? What do you think?

I noticed that too & it annoyed me - I assumed that they thought we were too thick to know what a paediatrician is. Definate dumbing down in my opinion

MissAnneElk · 04/03/2010 11:22

So glad it wasn't just me. I was a bit disappointed that he got through to the quarter final because I will have to hear it again.

ImSoNotTelling · 04/03/2010 11:23

I think they probably thought that some people wouldn't understand what a paediatrician was.

Not that people would get it confused with paedophile. Can you imagine.

Voiceover: And the next contestant is John, a convicted paedophile from devon
John torode: hi john. so you're a paedophile? great. that must be interesting. So what are you cooking for us today...

Poledra · 04/03/2010 11:26

I was irritated by this too, but my DH thought exactly as your did, OP. Remember the Welsh paediatrician whose property was vandalised by f*ckwits who thought she was a paedophile?

I wanted him and the tailor to come and cook my dinner, mind you - looked nice!

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/03/2010 11:27

Yes, DH and I were practically shouting at the television by the time it got to the end!

Paediatrician!

cakeywakey · 04/03/2010 11:28

So glad to hear I'm not the only one who shouts at the TV - am doing it a lot at the moment

I got this from the HV of all people a couple of weeks ago re ds

'he'll have to be checked by the baby-doctor'

baby-doctor?

ffs

mrsruffallo · 04/03/2010 11:30

Lol I'm SoNotTelling
That's about it I reckon.
The BBC would be flooding with complaints for allowing a self confessed paedophile to take part in a cooking competition

Poledra · 04/03/2010 11:31

MrsBadger, baby doctor

MrsBadger · 04/03/2010 11:33

I must admit that was the image I had, Poledra...

cakeywakey · 04/03/2010 11:34

What if they have a contestant who's a gynaecologist? I'd love to see the caption for that one

OP posts:
Poledra · 04/03/2010 12:11

Haha, cakey. And if it says Fanjo Doctor, then we'll know one of the crew is a Mumsnetter.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/03/2010 12:50

I noticed it too, but figured it was to protect him form all the ignoramuses who would just read "paedo" and then try to make his life hell...

the story about the paediatrician that was attacked

coldtits · 04/03/2010 12:52

your Dh is right. It's a twatfilter.

It's hilarious in a very bad way.

witchwithallthetrimmings · 04/03/2010 12:58

no i reckon it is because they could not trust "ingredients expert" GW to remember to not to say peadophile rather then Paediatrician

deloola · 04/03/2010 15:30

I was just about to start this very thread

Dumbing down from the bbc - I very nearly emailed Points of View! Children's Doctor ffs.

knowmyrights · 04/03/2010 16:02

Good point about the gynaecologist, can you imagine "... our next contestant, 44 year old fanny mechanic Mark ....".

LynetteScavo · 04/03/2010 16:05

The paediatrician who examined DS2 after he was born intorduced himself as the "baby Doctor" as if he were talking to a 5 yo.

I looked like this this.

cakeywakey · 04/03/2010 18:13

I'd also like to see their descriptions for proctologists or urologists. Oh, I do hope we're about to see many more people from the medical profession applying to be contestants

OP posts:
KurriKurri · 04/03/2010 18:19

They could have a special series -medical masterchef. -Consisting entirely of people who want to radically change their career, and don't mind a euphemistic re-wording of their job title.

Mind you with John and Greg in the room a proctologist would probably think he was back at his day job.

cakeywakey · 04/03/2010 18:21

KurriKurri I reckon you could pitch that to the BBC

OP posts:
frecklyspeckly · 04/03/2010 21:13

I'd just like to add myself to the list of people who find the term 'baby doctor' infuriating. Obviously we all find it too hard to master technical aspect of the name paediatrician and need a more literal interpretation. I have thought of some more examples the BBC/NHS could use :
dentist: mouth looker
vet: animal doctor
counsellor: trouble helper

LynetteScavo · 04/03/2010 21:44

Isn't there an "animal doctor" Barbie, or similar type toy?

LynetteScavo · 04/03/2010 21:46

oh yes!

cakeywakey · 04/03/2010 23:03

Would that make my rhuematologist a 'hurty joint doctor' do you reckon?
