Lark Rise: my shameful secret

In RL, nobody but DP knows that I never ever miss an episode of Lark Rise, and always cry at the blatantly emotionally manipulative bits. I know, I know ... but it could be worse. At least I don't watch Heartbeat. Or Kingdom. I feel strongly that Lark Rise is superior-quality Sunday night pish and will defend it unto the death (anonymously, online).

V V excited about new series which seems to be starting tonight -- just saw trail on BBC News 24. Anyone else?

I liked the first series but it's becoming increasingly saccharin, as is Candleford sadly, possibly as they move further away from the original concept, but we're all allowed our guilty pleasures.

Shodan · 10/01/2010 13:43

Is it? Oooh. Must check.

I love Lark Rise.

But then I'm a sucker for pretty much every costume drama going.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 10/01/2010 13:50

I haven't actually seen Cranford (reckon that is what you meant, Heated?) but I accept your criticism of saccharine-ness ... still intend to be glued to sofa at 8:00, though. I need to know what's happened to everyone. Can't quite remember how they left things at the end of last series -- I know there was the wedding at the end, and that Dorcas's sort-of-rejected lover had had some sort of accident and was not at all well. isn't that right?

I liked the two dress-shop sisters more and more last season as they fleshed them out a bit beyond stereotypes; hope that continues.

I LOVE Lark Rise. Even dh watches it, gets all weepy and then claims he despises it.

I like Dorcas and her myriad one little weaknesses.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 10/01/2010 13:56

DP watches it too and admits he's quite fond of it, though still claims he is primarily watching to keep me company.

OOhhh...I adore Lark Rise. When's it on??

Heated · 10/01/2010 14:44

Darn it, yes I meant Cranford, Candleford is the nearest town to LR, where they walk 7m in about 15 mins

Will join you in watching the first episode, I like Thomas and the dress-making sisters, but just not entirely sure I'll stick with it.

RTKangaMummy · 10/01/2010 18:01

I love CRANFORD and Lark Rise

wigglybeezer · 10/01/2010 18:45

I can't get the names right either, especially since Victoria Wood did that "Lark Pies to Cranchesterford" skit.

Strangely my Tweenage sons like it (and Cranford) .

bea · 10/01/2010 19:58

oooo! i love it to bits... Cranford too!!!

satc2bringiton · 10/01/2010 21:49

I love this too - it pure comfort TV.

The first series was brilliant, and although I enjoyed the 2nd series it had gone a bit downhill.

Great 1st episode of the 3rd though.

Does anyone remember where the boy came from (the one at the PO)?

FlyMeToDunoon · 10/01/2010 21:53

I was disapponted with the first episode. very predictable and sappy.
Minnie, the shop ladies, Dorcas and Queennie are the best.
Love the dresses.

Heated · 10/01/2010 21:58

He's the son of the character played by Jason Merrells the LR resident made good, who she had a romantic interest in, in series 2.

Too much soft-focus lighting and sentimental music for me tonight, but I still like the undemanding stories and period detail.

MistleSnail · 10/01/2010 22:11

I enjoyed it tonight - slipper telly . Love the naked garden scene...

Cranford was very boring over Chrimbo i thought...not a patch on this IMO.

MistleSnail · 10/01/2010 22:13

Anyone else notice how much weight Dorcas has lost? In her neck and on her waistline. Is JS doing stage stuff at the mo - that usually does it?

FlyMeToDunoon · 10/01/2010 22:48

I thought Dorcas was looking very slim in the waist too.
I love her outfits the most.

satc2bringiton · 11/01/2010 08:13

Yes there was one shot of her waist and I actually went - it was tiny

Thanks for the boy update - I had forgotten all about that.

spikemomma · 11/01/2010 20:09

Yes! i thought Dorcas had a teeny waist when i watched it! She was never that tiny in years gone by, i was a bit shocked.

Anyway, I love the programme. Mistlesnail hit the nail on the head with 'slipper TV'. It's so comforting and i admit it, i was actually - sigh - excited about it coming on last night. Tragic, bit cosey all at the same time. I love the language. Ahhhh.
