The swedish ones are so much better.

Was really excited with all the build up for the Kenneth Brannagh ones then they were a real disapointment.

diddl · 03/01/2010 21:21

Yes, the KB ones just don´t work.

I guess it´s people with "clipped" accents calling each other Swedish names!

They're ok, I think. Much prefer the Swedish ones but agree, English-accented people calling each other Ann-Britt etc sounds odd.

One of teh Swedish cast was a baddie in this one - a little Wallander in-joke.

JeffVadar · 04/01/2010 10:30

I loved the fact that the baddie was the policeman in the Swedish one!

Agree that the English version is not nearly as good though. (Still feeling about Stefan).

alana39 · 04/01/2010 12:02

Oh is that where I recognised him - Strom was one of Noren or Peters in the Swedish one?

Had just finished re-reading Faceless Killers a few days ago (finding Wallander novels are perfect for middle of the night feeding) which made last night's one even more disappointing as it's so rushed.

Still have to watch the last Swedish one so don't know what's happened to Stefan yet.

JulesJules · 04/01/2010 12:05

I liked the first set of these KB ones, but we have watched all the Swedish ones in between and they are much better. KB aside (who I think is good) the acting is pretty poor. British actors thesp it up too much. HELLO. I'm ACTING.

Loved seeing Svartman the Swedish policeman as the baddie. And loved the theme tune (Emily Barker - I've just ordered her CD)

Devastated about Linda - the actress, I mean, watching that last episode was unbearable.

JulesJules · 04/01/2010 12:08

Linda in the Swedish ones I mean. Sorry that was a bit confusing.

BelleDameSansMerci · 04/01/2010 12:10

I'm ashamed to admit I didn't even know there were Swedish ones... Are they available with English subtitles? I liked the KB ones although they're a bit miserable but would love to see originals.

alana39 · 04/01/2010 12:21

Yes they have been on BBC4 - the last 1 or 2 should be on iplayer but might be better to wait for them to repeat them so you can see from the beginning. There were quite a few - maybe 13?

There were some earlier ones as well which were based on the books but I seem to remember reading somewhere that the last series just had the outline written by Henning Mankell then a team of scriptwriters did the detail, which is another reason why they might be better as the Branagh ones take the basic plot from the book, lose lots of detail, insert random personal life stuff and don't flow very well. Great scenery though .

BelleDameSansMerci · 04/01/2010 12:23

Thank you alana. Will get looking on radiotimes.com or whatever it is that lets you search for favourites.

pantshavenames · 04/01/2010 12:26

I think the swedish ones are much better (have just ordered the box set for stupid amounts of money ).
And yes very about eye candy Stefan.

I have recorded the KB episode from last night so please don't tell me that the baddie is supposed to be a surprise...

said · 04/01/2010 23:15

Yes to being very about Stefan and also finding a lot of the Linda scenes very harrowing after knowing how the actress died. Really, really sad. I think Mankell said he couldn't write about the Linda character any more after that

TwoIfBySea · 04/01/2010 23:21

No the baddie isn't supposed to be a surprise pants but at least you won't spend time thinking "Is that Svartman???"

Am guessing that these are the earlier books as Martin and Ann-Britt are so much younger? I've only read a couple of the Wallander books and seen the Swedish show. Can't wait until they show the new ones.

Highlander · 05/01/2010 10:21

It was CRAP. The original Swedish ones are fantastic.

midnightexpress · 05/01/2010 10:35

I agree that the Swedish ones are much better, though the last one was particularly harrowing, especially when I found out about the poor woman who played Linda. The Branagh ones are all a bit 'drahhhhhma' aren't they?

Have they made any more than those 13 Swedish ones?

alana39 · 05/01/2010 11:28

TwoIf the KB one this week was the first book but the first series did some of the books in the middle so I think they've just picked more photogenic actors.

Midnight I realised a bit late that the Swedish ones were on - some time earlier last year they showed a series of 3 then they've had the 13. Not sure if they were completely different or if they just showed 3 to start with the whole series as missed the start both times, but in the series of 3 Linda is only joining the force and looks much younger.

midnightexpress · 05/01/2010 11:30

We're in Scotland and had the first 10 and then the last 3 just before Xmas. I missed 11 and 12 though and I could have sworn that Linda was pg (by Stefan) earlier in the series, although I don't know if it was mentioned? Or am I imagining that?

mrmellors · 05/01/2010 13:30

I didn't think the English ones were crap at all, though Dear Ken did somewhat overact the "old tired copper" aspect, bless him. The BBC4 showings of the Swedish version stopped abruptly when they realised the viewing figures were much better than expected, so they decided to leave the final two episodes for Christmas (no, I don't get it either).

Poor DH loved it all as he lived in Sweden for some years and still misses it. He didn;t mind the English version either, though he had to restrain himself ("IT'S NOT BLOODY NORKOPPING!" ETC ETC).

Loved the Swedish Linda, she was such a central character - though DH says they have made another series without her. Yes there was a suggestion that she and Stefan may be expecting, but then he went and shagged someone else I believe due to his commitment issues!

mrmellors · 05/01/2010 13:33

Oh and we LOVED spotting the baddie in Faceless Killers - what a hoot! DH says his accent in the Swedish version is meant to suggest he's a bit of a thicko plod, so was funny to see him promoted to baddie!

Blackduck · 05/01/2010 13:37

KB is just so wrong as wallander isn't he... Ilove the Swedish ones and the fact you can actuallyunderstand half tbe dialogue without reading the subtitles!! Poor old wallander thou', seems to spend all his time being shot at or blown up

Highlander · 05/01/2010 14:25

, 60 of our Great British pounds for 4 episodes of the original Swedish......

alana39 · 05/01/2010 14:55

Well I suppose it's only £5 an hour!

On a different topic does anyone remember the name of the British TV programme where the man who plays Ken's dad was also senile, also father of policemen. Something to do with a missing girl and the coppers killing the man they suspected of abducting but it turns out they were wrong and I think senile Mr Wallander senior gives the away .

mrmellors · 05/01/2010 15:02

Yes! Was a very depressing series on a Friday night a few years ago.

They drove him out into the woods and killed and buried him, and then one of them was tortured by guilt about it (he was married with daughters and his wife left him).

Wasn't there a young mentally disabled chap involved as well - I think he used to hang around a graveyard?

Will have to google now ....

mrmellors · 05/01/2010 15:10

Ok found it - "Conviction" 2004, found it on IMDb website. David Warner was the actor involved.

alana39 · 06/01/2010 10:18

mrmellors thankyou for that. Must go to IMDb (had forgotten the name of the site) and look up all the answers to my Christmas TV "what were they in again?" questions.
