I have had to set the video. DS is watching Wallace and Gromit on BBC1. TBH, since it's the first time he's settled down all day and stopped bouncing (literally), I'm happy to sacrifice David Tennant for the chance to have a cup of tea in peace

nymphadora · 26/12/2009 17:06

Seen it

madrose · 26/12/2009 17:06

set this to record ages ago, will enjoy when dh goes out

ProfYaffle · 26/12/2009 17:10

Oh, don't! I'm desperate to watch but it's not a popular choice, especially as the dds are watching the Were Rabbit thingie. I set it to tape at home but there was a big power cut while we were away so that won't have worked.

It is on bbc isn't it? I'll have to watch on iplayer anon.

Flame · 26/12/2009 19:18

"Why has Dr Who gone mad?"

I'm annoyed - missed most of it and haven't got the time to watch the end now What I saw was great

MollieO · 26/12/2009 19:25

Just got in and watching it with ds - who thinks it is Dr Who and won't be convinced otherwise!

Flame · 26/12/2009 19:25

He'd be fine with my two then. I gave up in the end and said "Yes, Dr Who has gone mad, and no, it isn't nice to talk to your mummy like that is it?"

MollieO · 26/12/2009 19:28

I would like to see DT doing R3.

MollieO · 26/12/2009 19:29

Mind you if he did ds would be concerned about his bad back and wonder how it would affect him travelling in the Tardis .

Flame · 26/12/2009 19:30

I'm concerned how DD1 is going to cope with the regeneration - she's only seen DW with DT in it...

MollieO · 26/12/2009 19:34

I'm not sure we will carry on watching once DT and RTD have left.

Ds is completely engrossed in Hamlet. He doesn't seem to notice the different language style.

MollieO · 26/12/2009 20:11

'Mummy Dr Who is dead!'

Flame · 26/12/2009 20:35

Mine were engrossed too - needed them to go to bed though

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 26/12/2009 20:35

We've watched the first third of it but dd kept coughing and yawning and it was taking all my concentration to figure out what was going on (am a literary thicko). So am going to watch more tomorrow.

It is really much better than I thought it would be. (have only ever seen one shakespere and that was Midsummers night done by shakespere4kidz and never done any at school)

So have I go this right?
Hamlets Dad, the King of Denmark is dead. His Mum married his Uncle practically as soon as the funeral was over. Hamlet is really glum and they are telling him to cheer up.

Orpehlia says Hamlet loves him but her Dad says she can't see him. Orphelias brother has gone off somewhere with condoms (got lost at that bit).

Hamlets friend Horatio and some other bloke has seen Hamlets Dads ghost wandering about the place. Hamlet meets the ghost who says that his Uncle murdered him. Horatio and other bloke are made to swear they won't tell anyone.

Thats as far as we got.

nymphadora · 26/12/2009 21:02

Shakespeare is totally different on stage to in books, and am not convinced by Shakespeare4kids [snob] although its better than nothing

Took my dds(then 7 & 9) to RSC last summer and they loved it , it was a performance for young people but they hit the right note between accurate to the play and fun!

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 26/12/2009 22:33

it is clearly an area to develop my education!

Flame · 26/12/2009 22:49

I am always amazed at how easy shakespeare is when you watch it as opposed to reading/studying it.

I couldn't remember much about Hamlet (my knowledge is from bits picked up over the years, and the reduced shakespeare version ). From what I could gather from the middle bit I've seen - The uncle killed the dad and married the mum to become king, he knows about it and it has tipped him over the edge (not helped by seeing ghosts), and the uncle knows he knows so is sending him to England.

Can't remember what the situation was with Ophelia...

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 26/12/2009 22:54

ooh, didn't know hamlet was losing the plot - just thought he was quite an emotional chap. looking forward to watching more tomorrow.

Clary · 26/12/2009 22:57

yes merry kitten that's about it for the start.

Hamlet can't decide what to do wrt killing his uncle in revenge for dad's death; dithers a bit (to be or not to be etc) and stages a play to try to blow the gaff.

Finally he kills Polonius by mistake, so has a duel with Laertes and they all die, pretty much.

Sorry after all the uber ponce bit DD and DS1 got fed up after about 20 mins and went to do crafty stuff then insisted on the Gruffalo at 7pm. Have HDed it tho

OP posts:
Flame · 26/12/2009 22:59

oh i'd forgotten about the play. its the whole play within a play malarky.

anyone know if it is being shown again so I can record it? I still can't believe how engrossed a 6yr old and 3 yr old were

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 26/12/2009 23:03

Thanks Clary! so thats where tobe or not to be comes from. Was Polnius the other bloke then? and which one was Laertes? (must do someting about this lack of concentration thing)

Clary · 26/12/2009 23:03

flame yr DCs are 6 and 3 wow I'm impressed!

My uninterested DCs are 10 and 8

Maybe the 6yo would've liked it but he was at the match so I can't check his ponce artsy credentials

OP posts:
Clary · 26/12/2009 23:05

Kitten, Laertes is Ophelia's brother and polonius is their dad.

L goes away early on (with the condoms - not in Shakey's script) and Polonius gives him the big speech "neither a borrower or a lender be" etc.

He's the one who looks like the mayor - played by the senior partner in Kavanagh QC if you ever watched that.

OP posts:
OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 26/12/2009 23:11

oooooo, that makes sense. oops! so Laertes must come back or hamlet meets him? I guess I'll find out tomorrow.
dh has reminded me that dd has a childrens version of the play if we get lost. (I thought that he had had a proper education but he is as lost as me!)

Well. To sleep, perchance to dream
